KUWAIT CITY, Oct 24, (KUNA): A ceremony to inaugurate two bridges was held in Krupanj town, Macva District, west Serbia, in the presence of Kuwait Ambassador to Kuwait Youssef Abdulsamad and Director-General of Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) Abdulrahman Al-Awn.

The two bridges were financed by the second tranche of a Kuwaiti donation to Serbia following the devastating floods of 2014. KRCS supervised the implementation of the humanitarian project.

Addressing the ceremony, Ambassador Abdulsamad expressed joy for the success of the project which “reflects the depth of the friendly relations between Kuwait and Serbia.” One of the two bridges is named as “Serbia-Kuwait Friendship Bridge” in recognition of Kuwait’s humanitarian role around the globe, he pointed out.

Abdulsamad recalled that the United Nations honored His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as Humanitarian Leader and Kuwait as Center of Humanitarian Action.

He congratulated the residents of the area on the project which will greatly facilitate traffic in the area.

Meanwhile, Al-Awn commended the construction process as “high-quality and transparent.” On his part, Ivan Isailovic, mayor of the town, expressed gratitude to Kuwait for the generous donation.

“But for the contributions of Kuwait and other friendly countries, the reconstruction of the town would take up to 30 years,” he pointed out. Isailovic voiced hope for continued cooperation with the State of Kuwait in such important sectors as investment and tourism.

On a similar note, director of the Office for Assistance and Rehabilitation of Flooded Areas, launched by the Serbian government on May 22, 2014, in the wake of the floods, thanked the Kuwaiti government, the embassy and the KRCS for their role in the post-disaster rehabilitation process.

He noted that the first tranche of the Kuwaiti donation was used in financing the construction of 25 housing units for the displaced families in Obrenovac town two years ago.
