LOS ANGELES, Oct 25, (Agencies): Rookie Trevor Siemian ruined Brock Osweiler’s return to Denver as the Broncos outgunned the Houston Texans 27-9, after the visitors were rocked by a horrific injury to right tackle Derek Newton on Monday.

Siemian, who stepped up as Denver’s starting quarterback after Osweiler left the Super Bowl champions in the close season, completed 14 of 25 passes for 157 yards at Mile High Stadium.

As well as connecting with Demaryius Thomas for a four-yard touchdown, Osweiler piloted the Broncos on

World Surf League World Title winner Hawaian surfer John John Florence competes during the final heat of the Portuguese stage of the World Surf League championship at Supertubos beach near Peniche, central Portugal on Oct 25. Hawaii’s John John Florence became world surfing champion for the first time on Tuesday after South Africa’s Jordy Smith was eliminated in the semifinals in Portugal.

The 24-year-old had advanced to the finals of the Portugal Pro event held off the coast of Peniche in central Portugal with a win over California’s Kolohe Andino.

He was able to claim the title before the final stage in Hawaii in December after Smith — the only rival with enough points to beat him — was defeated by

four other scoring drives as Denver improved to 5-2 after consecutive losses.

Siemian was thrust into the role of successor to Peyton Manning following the legendary quarterback’s retirement at the end of last season.

Osweiler was widely expected to replace Manning as Denver’s starting signal-caller but surprised the Broncos by signing for Houston.

Denver’s other touchdowns came from running backs CJ Anderson (16 carries, 107 yards) and rookie Devontae Booker (17-83), who both barreled over from close range to score.

Osweiler meanwhile struggled with only 22 of 41 passes completed for 141 yards. He failed to find the end zone and also threw a costly turnover.

All of Houston’s points came via three field goals from Nick Novak.

A miserable night for Houston was compounded by a seasonending injury to offensive linebacker Newton midway through the first quarter.

The 28-year-old reportedly suffered torn patella tendons in both knees after crumpling to the turf as he shaped to block Von Miller.

Newton needed lengthy treatment on the field and saw both legs placed in temporary casts before he was taken away on a medical buggy.

Meanwhile, Miami Dolphins running back Arian Foster announced his retirement, effective immediately, on Monday after eight NFL seasons.

Foster, 30, wrote a letter published on ESPN’s The Undefeated explaining his decision to walk away.

“There comes a time in every athlete’s career when their ambition and their body are no longer on the same page. I’ve reached that point,” Foster said in the letter.

“My father always said, ‘You’ll know when it’s time to walk away.’ It has never been more clear than right now. I’m walking away with peace.”

A four-time Pro Bowler, Foster spent his first seven seasons with the Houston Texans and is the franchise’s all-time rushing leader. He ends his career with 6,572 yards and 54 touchdowns but dealt with constant injuries over the past several seasons.

“My whole life has gone toward this. I can’t believe I’m the World Champion. That was my goal. This is my dream. I’m so stoked,” he said.

Florence finished in first place in the classification with 56,400 points, followed by Brazil’s Gabriel Medina who had 45,450 points and Smith with 41,700 points.

He is the fourth Hawaiian ever to win a world title after Derek Ho in 1993, Sunny Garcia in 2000 and Andy Irons in 2002, 2003 and 2004. (AFP)

Foster

Foster led the NFL in rushing yards in 2010 and in rushing touchdowns twice (2010, 2012). He was a First-Team All-Pro in 2010, racking up career-high totals of 1,616 yards and 16 scores on the ground.

Foster joined the Dolphins last offseason and played in four games this season, totaling just 55 rushing yards and failing to score a touchdown.

“I want to thank the Miami Dolphins, with everything in me, for allowing me to bow out with grace and making this process as easy as possible. It means everything to my family and I.”

A native of Albuquerque in New Mexico, Foster entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee in 2009.

He rushed for 2,964 yards and 23 touchdowns — including 1,193 and 12 as a junior in 2007 — over four seasons with the Volunteers.
