GENEVA, Dec 2, (KUNA): Kuwait has donated USD five million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to help provide medical assistance to the war-torn Iraqi city of Mosul, a Kuwaiti diplomat said Friday.

Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim told KUNA that the voluntary donation will provide necessary medications and ensure food security in the city that has been experiencing military operations against the socalled Islamic State (IS) for some time now.

Establishing health stability in this war-torn area will secure the safety of neighboring countries, especially Kuwait, from any outbreak of diseases since epidemics and diseases recognize no brorders.

Hence, it is of utmost importance to deal with the situation and to lend a helping hand to the WHO to contain the situation, Al-Ghunaim said.

The donation is also part of Kuwait’s membership of the WHO’s executive board, he said, reiterating Kuwait’s high interest in contributing to health and environment issues worldwide.

On his part, WHO’s Executive Director of Health Emergencies Programs Dr Peter Salama told KUNA that Kuwait’s donation to fund medical assistance in Mosul comes in a time when many Iraqis: the injured, women, children and those with special need require an urgent medical attention.
