WHO welcomes $5 mln Kuwaiti life-saving aid to people in Mosul

Kuwait raises $500,000 for Aleppo

BAGHDAD, Dec 14, (KUNA): The World Health Organization (WHO) has welcomed the generous support of the State of Kuwait through a $5 million donation to help people in the city of Mosul obtain

greater medical assistance.

In a press statement, the WHO-Iraq office said that the Kuwait aid has made a great difference particularly to the most vulnerable - women, children, the injured and people with special needs. “The situation in Mosul is dire, and as we gain access to more people, we are seeing that they are in urgent need of both essential health services and trauma care,” said Altaf Musani, WHO Representative in Iraq.

“It is a double burden: treating conflict-related injuries while also providing routine care for women giving birth, for children to be immunized, and for chronic diseases to be managed before they get worse.” Kuwait has also vowed to continue to support to the WHO activities to help vulnerable people in Iraq.

“We want to help ease the suffering of people living in Mosul, where too many people are in urgent need of health care,” the WHO quoted Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim, as saying in the press statement.

“We will continue working with WHO to help people in places where the need is greatest.” With military operations continuing in Mosul, WHO noted that it is working with national health authorities and health cluster partners to ensure that people with war-related trauma injuries have access to life-saving medical care.

WHO estimates that some 40, 000 civilians will need trauma care due to Mosul military operations.

WHO recently delivered life-saving medicines and medical supplies and kits inside Mosul. The shipment which provided materials to treat almost 13, 000 patients, include chronic disease medicines, antibiotics and supplies to treat trauma injuries. However, more supplies and services are needed as the conflict continues, the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) said it has raised a sum of $500,000 in humanitarian and relief aid to the residents of the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo.

The sum is just part of a USD-1-million fund-raising campaign aiming at alleviating the sufferings of the residents of Aleppo, the KRCS’s public relations and media chief Khaled Al-Zaid said to KUNA.

Al-Zaid urged Kuwaiti people to support the relief campaign, dubbed “Aleppo Scream” in order to help in easing out the woes of Aleppo residents who have been suffering awfully critical living conditions.

He added that the society’s humanitarian initiative was launched yesterday (Tuesday) and runs for five days.

Efforts

It comes within the framework of Kuwait’s relentless relief efforts aiming at helping Syrian refugees and displaced persons in general and people of Aleppo in particular, the KRCS official pointed out.

The besieged Syrian city of Aleppo has been under stiff attacks by Syrian government forces and their allied militias, sparking wide-scale Arab and international outrage.

Earlier on Tuesday, the UN Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency session upon France and UK request against the tragic backdrop in Aleppo.

UN Secretary – General Ban Ki-moon appealed to those who have the influence and the power to alleviate the suffering of the people of Aleppo.

Qatar called Tuesday for an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent delegates to discuss the tragic situation in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Today, the State of Kuwait has called for holding an extraordinary Arab ministerial meeting next Monday to discuss the “tragic conditions” in the war-torn city.
