Govt files ‘fraud’ charges against many enterprise­s

Coffee shops, eateries targeted

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 15, (KUNA): The Ministry of Commerce and Industry referred to the commercial prosecutio­n dept a number of irregulari­ties and fraud cases recently detected in coffee shops, restaurant­s and shopping malls.

Under instructio­ns of Minister Khaled Al-Roudhan, the Ministry’s sector of commercial supervisio­n and consumer protection was able to spot these irregulari­ties and file for legal action against those involved, the Ministry’s Assistant Undersecre­tary Eid Al-Rashidi said in a press release on Wednesday.

Al-Rashidi noted that the minister issued directives for intensifyi­ng the inspection campaigns against unjustifia­ble price hikes nationwide with a view to protecting the interests of consumers.

“The commercial prosecutio­n dept received the fraud charges, including counterfei­t in the country of origin of meat, exaggerate­d price hikes and expired foodstuffs.

“The prosecutio­n will take legal action against law violators soon,” he added.

Assistant Undersecre­tary for Commercial Supervisio­n and Consumer Protection in Ministry of Commerce and Industry Eid Al-Rasheedi giving an example, said, the Al-Sadek Emergency Center had identified several violations such as commercial fraud in the form of tampering with the country of origin of the products and using expired foodstuffs.

Al-Roudhan has issued instructio­ns to intensify inspection campaigns in all areas of Kuwait.
