Hunt continues as 11 containers out of 13 still missing: sources

‘Fintas Group’ suspect held; Barrak assaulter committed ‘suicide’

Agencies KUWAIT CITY, March 13: Ministry of Interior has informed the relevant investigat­ion committee of the National Assembly that the search for the missing 11 containers out of the total 13 smuggled containers is ongoing, parliament­ary sources say.

They revealed that the parliament­ary committee is worried about the contents of the missing containers and that they could be weapons or drugs, which could pose a serious threat to the security of the country.

The sources stressed that Ministry of Interior has not even figured out the location of the containers, indicating that concerns in this regard have not been alleviated despite the report issued by the General Customs Department which claimed that the contents of the missing containers were just some household goods that had arrived from the United Arab Emirates.

However, the sources revealed that the two confiscate­d containers were filled with liquor bottles, but the contents of the remaining 11 containers are still unknown.

They said they are expecting the issue to be solved within two months with the cooperatio­n of the concerned authoritie­s.

Suspect arrested:

Detective officers from Sentences Execution Department arrested Saud Al-Asfour who was sentenced to one year in prison in the Fintas Group case, making him the first among the suspects to commence the jail term.

A source said the officers had been monitoring his movement until they succeeded in identifyin­g his hideout and arrested him.

The Court of Cassation is still looking into an appeal the Public Prosecutio­n Department filed against the judgment, requesting the court to mete out stiffer punishment against the suspects who also appealed the case, praying the court to quash the judgment and set them free.

Inmate committed suicide:

Reports have emerged that the inmate who assaulted former MP Musallam Al-Barrak was found dead in a manner that appeared as though he committed suicide by hanging himself, reports AlSeyassah daily.

According to sources, the inmate was serving a two-year jail sentence for drug consumptio­n and peddling.

They affirmed that the corpse has been referred to the Forensics Department, revealing that the Central Prison Administra­tion has launched an extensive investigat­ion to determine the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the incident.

Accidents rate cut:

Chairperso­n of Kuwait Society for Traffic Safety, and member of the supreme traffic council Dr Badar Al-Matar said the rate of traffic accidents in the country dropped by 15 percent last year (2016) with 68,467 cases compared to 80,827 cases recorded in 2015, according to statistics of the General Traffic Department.

In a statement, Dr Al-Matar explained the number of traffic deaths also dropped in 2016 with 424 cases — a slight margin of 1.1 percent compared to 2015 when the country witnessed 429 deaths.

Dr Al-Matar added the total sum collected in 2016 by traffic sector through traffic violations was KD 5,543,860, indicating the revenue declined by 12.7 percent compared to KD 6,338,066 generated in 2015. He went ahead to praise the role played by the traffic police.

Teen girl raped:

Police have arrested a 19-year-old Kuwaiti for ‘raping’ a 17-year girl from an unidentifi­ed GCC State, reports Al-Anba daily.

According to a police source the suspect kept the girl in an apartment for three days and repeatedly had sex with her.

When she returned home, the family took the girl to a police station and she told the interrogat­or she befriended the youth via the social media and he promised to marry her.

The girl added the boyfriend invited her for a meal in a restaurant, and instead he took her to an apartment and spent three nights with her.
