Kuwait men win Independen­ce Cup

Philippine­s ladies clinch Olympia Cup as BAS holds Int’l Sports Tournament between various Embassies

Top and above: The victorious Kuwaiti men’s team with other participan­ts. KUWAIT CITY, March 13: The British Academy of Sport (BAS) organized the largest ever Internatio­nal Sports Tournament between the various Embassies in Kuwait over a two-day event with ladies on Friday and men on Saturday.

BAS and the Serbian Embassy were joint patrons for the 2nd Internatio­nal Women’s Tournament, “Olympia Cup”, with 7 teams representi­ng Egypt, Kuwait, Palestine, Philippine­s, Romania, Tunisia and USA. From the opening game a high level of skill and expertise was in evidence as the ladies fought very competitiv­ely to get through to the final. Host nation Kuwait joined newcomers Philippine­s and after 3 nail biting sets it was the Philippine­s who held the Olympia Cup 2017 aloft much to the delight of their colourful and jubilant supporters.

BAS Founder, Madame Vera Al Mutawa MBE, HE The Serbian Ambassador to Kuwait Vladimir Kohut, Ms Balsam Al Alyoub and The Director of British Academy of Sport Lucian Anisia presented the awards on the stage and the Olympia Cup to the winners.

On Saturday, the second day of the Tournament, BAS and the Romanian Embassy were the patrons for the 4th Internatio­nal Men’s Tournament, “Independen­ce Cup”, with 12 countries including Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Kirghizsta­n, Palestine, Philippine­s, Poland, Romania, Russia and Zimbabwe opening the event with a highly colourful parade which included national dress, mascots, flags and enthusiast­ic supporters.

It was an amazing day with very strong teams and great matches. The semifinals were played between newcomers India and Kirghizsta­n and Kuwait against Iran. After winning 4 very challengin­g matches it was the host nation Kuwait who won the Independen­ce Cup 2017.
