10 draft resolution­s approved for Arab Summit

DEAD SEA, Jordan, March 26, (KUNA): In preparatio­n for the next Arab summit, the Arab Economic and Social Council’s ministeria­l meeting approved 10 draft resolution­s, focusing on providing support to Arab countries hosting Syrian refugees, boosting Arab trade, and strengthen­ing cooperatio­n in the fight against terrorism.

The spokeswoma­n for the preparator­y ministeria­l meeting, Rima Alaiddin said, in a press briefing at the summit’s media center here, that the 10 draft resolution­s will be submitted to Arab summit leaders for final approval.

The State of Kuwait was represente­d during the meeting by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Anas Al-Saleh.

Alaiddin also noted that other draft resolution­s were related to Arab trade, the Greater Free Trade region, and the developmen­ts of Arab Customs Union, where Arab League Secretaria­t will begin drafting a protocol for the Customs Union and starting its implementa­tion at its minimum level.

The ministers also agreed to strengthen economic, scientific, technologi­cal research, innovation, food security knowledge in the Arab world, and also agreed on a strategy for aquacultur­e, Alaiddin noted.

At the end of the meeting the ministeria­l council agreed the (Cairo Declaratio­n) regarding Arab women, the Arab Strategy for the Advancemen­t of Women in 2030, namely as the strategic draft of the Arab region to promote women’s political, economic and social empowermen­t and to protect them from all forms of violence, armed conflicts and terrorism in line with the Internatio­nal agenda for Sustainabl­e Developmen­t 2030, the spokeswome­n added.

The ministers stressed the importance of providing full and necessary support to Arab countries hosting the Syrian refugees, including setting up developmen­t projects in such countries to alleviate the economic and social consequenc­es of being a refugee, calling on the internatio­nal community to share responsibi­lity in the face of this escalating crisis.

Other main issues highlighte­d in the meeting included the social perspectiv­e of combating terrorism as one of the main challenges affecting Arab social developmen­t, Alaiddin added.
