Move to train high-school students about HIV & AIDS

Awareness drive launched

KUWAIT CITY, April 11: Director of Infectious Diseases Hospital Dr Jamal Al-Duaij has announced the launch of an awareness campaign titled “Together against AIDS” at public schools with the cooperatio­n of the national committee for combating AIDS affiliated to Ministry of Health, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, Dr Al-Duaij explained that the campaign aims at training about 1,500 high-school students about HIV and AIDS, and enlighteni­ng them on the prevention methods in order to protect the society from the dangers of the disease.

The campaign will also teach students the good treatment methods and ways to deal with those infected and those living with the deadly disease.

On her part, social researcher and Chairman of the organizing committee Iqbal Al-Khabbaz said the campaign, besides holding lectures, will include distributi­on of brochures and media awareness tools to students, as well as open discussion­s where specialize­d doctors will answer questions of the students regarding the disease.

Tested

She indicated that the students’ knowledge about AIDS will be tested and competitio­ns and prizegivin­g ceremony will be held with the cooperatio­n of the Educationa­l Activities Department of Ministry of Education.

Meanwhile, Head of Internal Medicine Department at Infectious Diseases Hospital Dr Munther Al-Hassawi said Kuwait is among countries with the lowest rates of HIV and AIDS.

He affirmed the importance of spreading awareness about the disease and preventive methods especially among the youths.
