KUWAIT CITY, April 15: About 40 percent of every 100,000 children below the age of 15 suffer from Type 1 Diabetes, says the Chairman of Kuwait Diabetes Society Dr Waleed Al-Dahi.

He revealed that 24 percent of the entire Kuwaiti population is suffering from Type 2 diabetes, and a caution has been expressed concerning its recent spread among children.

Dr Al-Dahi said this during the closing ceremony of the Fourth Diabetic Children Future Camp in which 24 participant children of ages 9-12 years were honored.

He stressed that the celebration is a part of activities of the society, which is a branch of the International Diabetes Federation, adding that other diabetes societies across the world are involved in similar activities.

Dr Al-Dahi affirmed that the activities were borne out of desire to create an alternative environment to the clinics for the benefit of patients, their relatives and doctors.

He explained that gathering diabetic children together makes those children feel more relaxed and secure under the realization that they are not the only ones suffering from the disease. The officials also counsel relatives on how to relate with diabetic children and ways to go about normal daily activities without hindrances or the need for monitoring by doctors. This is in addition to provision of recreation and treatment inside the camp.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director General of Society Nutrition at the Public Authority for Diet and Nutrition Dr Nawal Al-Hamad declared that the authority will participate in the Gulf Day for Nutrition Safety and will represent Kuwait at the event.

She made this announcement during an awareness campaign on safety of nutrition titled “Safety of nutrition is everybody’s responsibility” which was held at the Avenues Mall.
