KUWAIT CITY, April 20: The US Embassy in Kuwait informs US citizens that localized demonstrat­ions are expected to take place in the Al-Andalous area in the Farwaniya Governorat­e beginning Friday morning on April 21, 2017. The localized demonstrat­ions may produce crowds.

Even demonstrat­ions intended to be peaceful can turn confrontat­ional and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrat­ions, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrat­ions.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah sent Thursday a congratula­tory cable to Queen Elizabeth II of the UK on the occasion of her birthday.

In the cable, His Highness the Amir wished her good health and wellbeing, and hailed historical and distinguis­hed retions between both countries and friendly people.

His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad AlJaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah sent Queen Elizabeth two cables of similar sentiments. (KUNA)

PARIS:

One policeman was shot dead and a gunman was also killed in a shoot-out Thursday evening on the fashionabl­e Champs Elysee avenue in central Paris, French media reported. A second policeman was also wounded in the incident which is still being clarified by police, “France 24” television reported.

The Interior Ministry is expected to make a statement later in the evening, sources at the ministry said. The shooting started about 20.45h local time near the Arc de Triomphe monument at the top of the world-famous avenue but it is not known if there is any link with terrorism or if it is a criminal matter.

France is on its highest alert ahead of presidenti­al elections that begin Sunday and in view of a series of terrorist attacks here in the past two years. The Champs Elysee area was crowded with tourists at the time of the incident and police have moved in to secure the area and empty it of by-standers, residents and tourists, reports said. (KUNA)

MOSCOW:

Russia’s Supreme Court on Thursday banned the Jehovah’s Witnesses from operating anywhere in the country, accepting a request from the justice ministry that the religious organizati­on be considered an extremist group.

The court ordered the closure of the group’s Russia headquarte­rs and its 395 local chapters, as well as the seizure of its property. (AP)

In a potentiall­y landmark case, an Italian court has ruled that excessive, work-related use of a mobile phone caused an executive to develop a benign brain tumour.

In a ruling handed down on April 11 but only made public on Thursday, the court in the northern town of Ivrea awarded the plaintiff a state-funded pension. (AFP)
