ELIZABETH, NJ, May 10, (Agencies): A linebacker in the NFL who starred at Rutgers University was charged by a grand jury on Tuesday in connection with a shooting in New Jersey and was put on waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Khaseem Greene was charged with unlawful weapon possession in a Dec 3, 2016, shooting in Elizabeth, where he is from.
Greene originally was charged in the case on Jan 4 and then signed with the Chiefs on Jan 21. A spokesman for the Chiefs did not immediately reply to an email to answer whether the team knew of the original charges when he first signed.
Greene and his lawyer did not immediately reply to phone messages seeking comment.

The Indianapolis Colts announced Tuesday they planned to retire Peyton Manning’s No. 18 jersey and unveil a statue of the legendary quarterback outside the team’s stadium in October.
Manning, who retired from the National Football League after leading the Denver Broncos to an upset Super Bowl victory over the Carolina Panthers last year, spent 13 seasons with the Colts.
He remains the team’s all-time leading passer with 54,828 yards and 399 touchdowns and also guided the team to a Super Bowl win over the Chicago Bears at the end of the 2006 season.

Carolina Panthers assistant general manager Brandon Beane their new general manager, the team announced Tuesday.
Beane spent the past 19 years with the Panthers. The past two seasons, he was the Panthers’ assistant general manager, and he spent seven years as the team’s director of football operations.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti publicly revealed he suffers from memory loss among other ailments stemming from his 14-year pro football career, Sports Illustrated reported.
Buoniconti, the defensive leader of the Miami Dolphins’ undefeated championship team of 1972, stopped short of saying he suffers from the brain disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. But the 76-year-old estimates he took approximately 520,000 blows to the head during his playing career with the then-Boston Patriots and Dolphins.
The Seattle Seahawks released cornerback Perrish Cox less than four months after signing the veteran. The 30-year-old Cox was one of eight players released by the Seahawks.
The Seahawks also released tight end Chris Briggs, center Ross Burbank, defensive tackle Rodney Coe, receiver Jamel Johnson, kicker John Lunsford and running backs George Farmer and Terrence Magee.
The Arizona Cardinals signed cornerback Jumal Rolle to a oneyear contract, the team announced.
Rolle, 26, has 17 tackles, three interceptions, four passes defensed and four special teams tackles over 19 games with the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens.
