Sandwich — cheese and tomatoes

- By Ahmed Al-Sarraf email: habibi.enta1@gmail.com

ON A COLD London night my friend M. Ma’arafi invited me to join him and two Lebanese friends in a famous London restaurant.

We took a long time, we had a long conversation and when it was time for dinner, we discovered it was too late because the kitchen had closed and we had to move to another place where we could satisfy the hunger of our stomachs.

We had different views about the restaurant we should go to. Two of us supported going to a specific restaurant and the other two chose another restaurant and each side defended its opinion.

After a brief discussion we seemed to agree to go to one of the two restaurants. Ma’arafi drove with one of the Lebanese and I with the other.

After half an hour of waiting at the restaurant, which we had decided upon, we discovered that a misunderstanding had occurred, and that our other friends had gone to the other restaurant and we came to this restaurant which did not serve ‘strangers’ but only the members. And the one who was the member had gone to the other restaurant.

It was too late to catch up with our friends in the other restaurant, especially it was past midnight and I was too hungry. I asked my Lebanese friend to take me to my apartment.

I remember as soon as I reached my apartment, I rushed directly to the kitchen. I took two pieces of bread and put them in the toaster. I pulled out a cheddar cheese slice and one tomato. I cut the tomato into slices placed them between the two slices of toast and the slice of cheese in the middle and I ended up having the most delicious sandwich ever.

After I was done, I went to the bedroom, put my head on the pillow and within seconds I was fast asleep.

I woke up at noon feeling very thirsty. I went to the kitchen to drink water and I saw something on the floor.

When I looked at it closely, I discovered it was the tomato and cheese that I had supposedly put between two slices of bread.

The filling had apparently fallen on the ground and I was too hungry to notice what I was eating. I ate just two plain slices of bread with nothing inside. It was my subconscious mind.
