Kuwait marks Worldwide Knit in Public Day
Crafters share their love of fibre crafts
KUWAIT CITY, June 20: Crafters in Kuwait celebrated the third Worldwide Knit in Public Day (WWKIPD) on June 10, 2017, at the Boulevard shopping mall in Salmiya.
Kuwait Crafters and event coordinator, Bharti Chopra, successfully organised this year WWKIPD event. Crafters young and old, from different nationalities, ethnicities and backgrounds came together on Saturday, June 10 to share their love of fibre crafts and experience the joy it brings of crafting together.
More than 40 crafters, who knit, crochet, cross-stitch, embroider and enjoy other forms of yarn crafting, participated in this year’s event. This year’s lucky draw prizes were sponsored by Needles and Yarn, Zephyr, Whiskers and Yarn, and Made by Mrs Q. Crafters were welcomed with handmade gifts and an official WWKIPD badge to commemorate the day.
WWKIPDAY is unique, in that it’s the largest knitter-run event in the world. Started in 2005 by Danielle Landes, Worldwide Knit in Public Day is a way for knitters and like-minded crafters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knitting and crocheting in public is a great way for people to come together, share ideas and make new friends. In Kuwait there are many different Crafting groups that never interact with each other, on Knit in Public Day they all come together in one place, making them hard to miss. In 2016, there were 1015 events in 57 countries.
Learning to knit and crochet is fun, creative and also benefits children in a variety of ways. As many teachers and doctors attest, children show improvement in fine motor coordination, reading, math, comprehension and critical thinking and problem-solving. Crafting can also soothe your body and mend your mind. Scientifically proven, knitting and crochet improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, rheumatoid arthritis and many other mental and physical ailments.
Kuwait crafters hope to attract an even bigger crowd of yarn craft enthusiasts at next year’s event and invite any new crafters to join their Facebook and Ravelry group.
