Los Angeles ‘stupid’ not to host ’28 Oly Games: mayor

LOS ANGELES, July 27, (Agencies): Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti says the US city “would be stupid” not to agree to stage the 2028 Olympics, leaving Paris poised to secure the 2024 Games.

Garcetti’s comments all but confirmed the French capital as the successors to Tokyo in 2020, with LA waiting a further four years for their turn.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) agreed this month to award the 2024 and the 2028 Games at the same time at a vote in Lima in September, effectively ensuring that the two candidates each will host a Games.

Garcetti told BuzzFeed on Wednesday: “Even though the Olympics will be smart to pick us for 2024, because LA has almost rebooted the brand, 2024 is not probably most likely to happen”. the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 32-year-old Team Dimension Data rider was forced out of the Tour with a shoulder injury after being elbowed by world champion Peter Sagan in the fourth stage earlier this month.

Cavendish, who still needs four stage wins to draw level with 34 of Merckx, said the crash motivated him to come back stronger next year.

“The stage I crashed in, I’m still pretty confident I would have won it,” Cavendish told the Times.

“I believe I’m the best and I believe I will be for a fair few more years. It’s given me the confidence to keep going.”

“People would argue that I only win sprint days so (Merckx’s) mountain days mean more ... but a number is a number and it gives me a target ... and that’s a target I can realistically think about.”

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid said he’s disappointed the NHL won’t be sending players to the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

“It would have been a special group, and you’re just hopeful to be a part of it,” McDavid told reporters at a charity event Wednesday. “It’s disappointing, but that’s the way it is. You want to be able to represent your country on the highest stage, and the Olympics is obviously the highest stage possible.”

McDavid’s comments came a day after Hockey Canada announced it was looking for non-NHL talent for Canada’s roster in Pyeongchang.

Sean Burke, the team’s GM, said Tuesday the bulk of Canada’s team will come from players based in Europe.

The NHL’s reasons not to participate in the upcoming Games include disagreements over costs as well as problems accommodating the Games during its regular season.
