Kuwait’s anti-terror efforts win praise

Sudan seeks Amir’s mediation over US sanctions

CAIRO, Aug 22, (KUNA): Arab officials Tuesday heaped praise on Kuwait for its determination to ensure that anti-terrorism efforts, agreed upon at an Arab summit, ultimately come to fruition.

In a speech to close a meeting of senior Arab officials, the council of Arab ministers of social affairs’ chief executive Ghada Wali was thankful “for a Kuwaiti initiative to support Arab efforts to exterminate terrorism.” On the Kuwaiti proposal, Wali, who is also Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity, said it would be taken into account and that a special committee dealing with the fight against terrorism will devise a plan of action based on the Kuwaiti suggestion.

Similarly, Jordan’s envoy to the Arab League Ali Al-Ayid spoke highly of the Kuwaiti plan, saying he was “grateful to Kuwait” for pitching this suggestion.

The Kuwaiti plan entails “programs and activities over a minimum two-year period that aim to buttress anti-terrorism efforts.”

Speaker of the Sudanese National

Prof Omer

Assembly Prof Ibrahim Ahmed Omer disclosed that his country requested His Highness the Amir to mediate with the US administration for expediting the lifting of economic sanctions imposed on Sudan, reports Al Anba daily.

He said this in an interview with the daily on the occasion of his visit to the country at the invitation of the Kuwait National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim. During the visit, he met His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad and His Highness the Premier Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak.

Prof Omer said His Highness the Amir affirmed that he would raise this issue with the US administration during his visit to Washington in the beginning of September.

He stressed that the Kuwaiti mediation will not contradict in any way with the Saudi mediation, but will be complementary to it, affirming his country’s support for the Kuwaiti mediation in resolving the Gulf dispute. He said it is the right path even though it is difficult to resolve this dispute between brothers.

Prof Omer indicated that the visit of President Omar al-Bashir to Kuwait is still under plans, denying that his visit to Kuwait was an alternative to the president’s visit to show his country’s support for the Kuwaiti initiative and mediation. He also indicated about the support from the Sudanese government and parliament for this Kuwaiti initiative. His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah received Tuesday at Sief Palace His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad AlAhmad
