Patriots receiver Edelman hurt in pre-season game

Elliott plans to attend appeal hearing

-

NEW YORK, Aug 26, (Agencies): The New England Patriots fear wide receiver Julian Edelman tore a ligament in his right knee in Friday’s pre-season win over the Detroit Lions, multiple media outlets reported.

The Super Bowl champion Patriots were tight-lipped about the injury after the game, but Edelman was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Saturday.

Edelman was injured on the team’s first drive, limping off the field after making three catches for 52 yards.

The nine-year veteran had caught the ball at Detroit’s 29yard line. He turned and planted his right foot into the turf and then immediately grabbed the back of his right knee.

After leaving the field under his own power, he was taken to the locker room in a cart.

The Patriots have a long list of wide receivers, including offseason acquisition Brandin Cooks, Malcolm Mitchell, Chris Hogan and Danny Amendola.

But Edelman has been Brady’s most frequent target over the past four years. Edelman has caught 356 passes for 3,826 yards and 20 touchdowns in that span.

The 31-year-old signed a two-year contract extension in the offseason.
