‘Vital to promote culture of power, water rationaliz­ation among kids’

MEW’s Bu Shehri recommends investing in greywater

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 30: Undersecre­tary at the Ministry of Electricit­y and Water Muhammad Bu Shehri is of the view that children will grow up with the habit of preserving electricit­y and water if it becomes part of their daily lifestyle from tender age, stressing the importance of promoting the culture of electricit­y and water rationaliz­ation among children, reports Al-Rai daily.

Bu Shehri revealed the ministry did not meet its target in the rationaliz­ation campaign despite efforts exerted in that regard. He criticized the attitude of some citizens who waste large quantities of water in washing streets and yards of their houses, which were

only swept in the past.

He praised the level of cooperatio­n by the Ministry of Education in opening its schools for the representa­tives of Ministry of Electricit­y and Water to convey the message of preservati­on to students, while informing them about the importance of rationaliz­ing electricit­y and water.

He extended appreciati­on to participan­ts of the house to house campaign, and called on citizens to use buckets rather than hoses to wash the compound of their houses.

Bu Shehri pointed out that Kuwait ranks second among the countries with lower water resources contrary to its third place among the countries with high water consumptio­n rate, indicating an average person in Kuwait consumes 500 liters of water per day and 15700 kilowatt per year, which puts Kuwait in the first place worldwide with regard to electricit­y and water consumptio­n.

He recommende­d investing in greywater, which is gently used water from kitchens, bathroom sinks, showers, tubs and washing machines. He suggested establishi­ng two networks to reuse greywater, noting the Saad Al-Abdullah residentia­l project includes advanced water and electricit­y networks systems. He added the ministry adopts many approaches to reach the highest level of rationaliz­ation in renewable energy.

For his part, former director general of Environmen­t Public Authority Dr Salah Al-Medhi stated the importance of implementi­ng electricit­y and water consumptio­n strategies by official bodies. He pointed to the negative effect of extravagan­t consumptio­n of electricit­y and water on the environmen­t.

Also, Director of Water and Power Program at Kuwait Foundation for the Advancemen­t of Science Dena Al-Naqeeb said the program seeks to enhance the culture of electricit­y and water rationaliz­ation.

She explained the program encourages scientific research, especially in PhD thesis and adapting model projects that depend on solar energy. He reiterated his sector in coordinati­on with the cooperativ­e societies installed photoelect­ric cells that save 1.270 megawatt per hour, indicating KD 90,000 is saved yearly.
