‘Vital to promote culture of power, water rationalization among kids’
MEW’s Bu Shehri recommends investing in greywater
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 30: Undersecretary at the Ministry of Electricity and Water Muhammad Bu Shehri is of the view that children will grow up with the habit of preserving electricity and water if it becomes part of their daily lifestyle from tender age, stressing the importance of promoting the culture of electricity and water rationalization among children, reports Al-Rai daily.
Bu Shehri revealed the ministry did not meet its target in the rationalization campaign despite efforts exerted in that regard. He criticized the attitude of some citizens who waste large quantities of water in washing streets and yards of their houses, which were
only swept in the past.
He praised the level of cooperation by the Ministry of Education in opening its schools for the representatives of Ministry of Electricity and Water to convey the message of preservation to students, while informing them about the importance of rationalizing electricity and water.
He extended appreciation to participants of the house to house campaign, and called on citizens to use buckets rather than hoses to wash the compound of their houses.
Bu Shehri pointed out that Kuwait ranks second among the countries with lower water resources contrary to its third place among the countries with high water consumption rate, indicating an average person in Kuwait consumes 500 liters of water per day and 15700 kilowatt per year, which puts Kuwait in the first place worldwide with regard to electricity and water consumption.
He recommended investing in greywater, which is gently used water from kitchens, bathroom sinks, showers, tubs and washing machines. He suggested establishing two networks to reuse greywater, noting the Saad Al-Abdullah residential project includes advanced water and electricity networks systems. He added the ministry adopts many approaches to reach the highest level of rationalization in renewable energy.
For his part, former director general of Environment Public Authority Dr Salah Al-Medhi stated the importance of implementing electricity and water consumption strategies by official bodies. He pointed to the negative effect of extravagant consumption of electricity and water on the environment.
Also, Director of Water and Power Program at Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science Dena Al-Naqeeb said the program seeks to enhance the culture of electricity and water rationalization.
She explained the program encourages scientific research, especially in PhD thesis and adapting model projects that depend on solar energy. He reiterated his sector in coordination with the cooperative societies installed photoelectric cells that save 1.270 megawatt per hour, indicating KD 90,000 is saved yearly.
