‘NUKS-Egypt budget hiked by minister this yr to KD 20,000’
One among 8 demands
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 30: Chairperson of the National Union of Kuwaiti Students (NUKS) in Egypt Saleh Al-Manoukh says the most important academic major that Kuwaiti students prefer to study in Egypt was law. However, since this was terminated two years ago, the students were redistributed to other scientific and arts majors. Since then, the most common major taken up by Kuwaiti students in Egypt is pertaining to the faculty of business, reports Al-Shahed daily.
In an exclusive interview with the daily, Al-Manoukh explained that the union’s budget this year has been increased by Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Mohammad Al-Fares to KD 20,000. This was one among the eight demands presented by the union, as its annual budget of KD 7,500 was not enough to organize activities and programs for the students.
The remaining seven demands have not yet been approved by the minister. They include increasing the monthly allowance of Kuwaiti students in Egypt, as KD 200 per month is not enough to meet the needs of students. It is also not logical to equate students studying locally and those studying abroad in terms of financial obligations.
Other demands included lifting the suspension on registration for post-graduate courses in the Asian Institute and the Environmental Institute, as the suspension rendered the students not able to register in any other universities.
Al-Manoukh affirmed that there are private universities in Egypt which are aggrieved as they are not being accredited by the concerned bodies in Kuwait, revealing that some of these universities can be considered as academically better than the public universities. He said these aggrieved universities include the October 6th University and Egypt University for Science and Technology, as the accreditations of both these universities were withdrawn.
