KUWAIT CITY, Aug 30: Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Monitoring and Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Eid Al-Rashedi said the ministry is keen on controlling sheep AlAdha sacrifice prices and taking strict measures as the Eid Al-Adha holiday approaches, reports Al-Qabas daily.
Al-Rashedi disclosed the Commercial Monitoring and Consumer Protection Department has successfully addressed 90 percent of commercial cheating cases, particularly in the sale of several commodities.
He affirmed the necessary action has been taken to facilitate procedures for importing sheep, while the traders and importers have been instructed to increase their supply to cover the market’s demand during the holiday.
He said a campaign has been launched to monitor warehouses of registered companies to ensure they do not hoard sheep.
Commenting on reports that some consumers have been victims of commercial cheating such as mixing local and imported sheep, Al-Rashedi said inspectors are conducting field tours regularly; pretending as consumers to issue citations against traders immediately after proving they are involved in commercial cheating.
He explained the department receives complaints directly or through the hotline; then the inspectors follow up complaints, register violations and refund the money paid by consumers who were cheated by unscrupulous traders.
Concerning the garments market, Al-Rashedi confirmed the department is closely monitoring this market as well, and its inspection campaigns include checking the country of origin and prices.
He added the department issued permits for putting goods on sale or offer, advising consumers to check the prices of commodities in different places before buying them.
He disclosed the department deleted the phrase, “Sold goods cannot be replaced or non-refundable,” in all receipts as the consumers have the right to refund or replace a purchased item within 15 days provided it is in good condition and the invoice is presented.
He stressed this applies any time, even when the commodities are on sale or offer; indicating the companies are aware of these procedures.
He added sale or offer promotions require approval of the ministry, stressing the need to specify the period of promotion. He said the companies are required to submit original receipts showing the original prices of commodities six months before the promotion in order to compare the prices. He revealed the companies must put the two original and discounted prices all throughout the promotion period.
