‘Kuwait eyes boost in culture of peace’
$1.5m aid set for ‘Rohingyas’
NEW YORK, Sept 9, (KUNA): Kuwait’s permanent delegate to the United Nations reiterated his country’s call for concerted efforts to promote the culture of peace and coexistence worldwide.
In his statement on Thursday to the UN General Assembly High-level Forum on the Culture of Peace, Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi said the values of tolerance, coexistence and non-discrimination were enshrined in Kuwait’s constitution long time ago. The Kuwaiti constitution ensures equality, freedom and justice for all citizens away from any kind of racial, religious, linguistic or gender discrimination, he stressed.
Out of keenness on these values, the Kuwaiti cabinet set up a high-level committee to promote tolerance and moderation as a means of combating extremism and intolerance, cementing the national unity, and boosting respect for the beliefs and privacies of one another.
Despite its small geographical area, Kuwait has long been the beacon of coexistence among people with different cultures, races and faiths. Everybody in Kuwait enjoys freedom of belief, mutual respect and decent life based on the principles of the UN Charter, he said, citing the first paragraph of the charter.
Ambassador Al-Otaibi thanked the UN Secretary General on his contributions to the realization of the noble values of the UN including the dialogue, peace and tolerance among people with different civilizations.
Meanwhile, Kuwait is allocating $1.5 million worth of urgent aid for the stricken Muslim Rohingya community in Myanmar, says the Minister of Awqaf.
Al-Jabri, also Minister of Islamic Affairs and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs, said in a statement to KUNA that the Kuwaiti assistance is intended to relieve the Muslims in Myanmar and help them bear burden of the extraordinary circumstances they are going through.
Al-Awqaf General Secretariat is earmarking USD one million and Al-Zakat House is contributing with USD half a million to fund humanitarian convoys to the Rohingyas.
