KUWAIT CITY, Sept 28: This summer 5 students from the British School of Kuwait, Kuwait New English School and Kuwait English School travelled to Bali, Indonesia to take part in the prestigious World School Debating Championships. Having gone through two selection processes, the team, which included Kuwaiti Nationals, set to work immediately.
The team was up against strong global competition, including teams from the USA, Korea, Canada and India, to name a few. Team Kuwait faced eight rounds of debate; four prepared motions and four impromptu motions, testing their knowledge current affairs, politics and other global issues. Subjects included NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe, labour unions and for-profit universities. The days were rigorous, beginning at six am and ending at ten pm and brains were thoroughly pushed to their limit for the ten-day competition.
Also during the competition the students were granted the opportunity to immerse themselves into the local culture, visiting traditional fire dances, temples and schools. As always, the students acted as honourable ambassadors for Kuwait. In return, Team Kuwait got the chance to introduce the wider world to life in Kuwait during a Cultural Night. With an array of local delicacies, attire and publications, the Kuwait stall was a huge success, largely thanks to the enthusiasm of the students. Well done to Team Kuwait: The British School of Kuwait Students – Alex White (Former Head Boy), Lauren Lilley, Dylan Peacock. New English School Student – Janah Murad. Kuwait English School Student – Masoud Hussain.
