AKO OFW holds livelihood training for distressed OFWs
Program held under Marquez every Friday
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 13: The AKO OFW, an advocacy group that promotes the rights and welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) has launched its livelihood training program for the distressed Filipino workers who are housed currently at the Philippine Overseas Labour Office (POLO) shelter. The AKO OFW Inc Educational and Training Program Committee held its third training session of Basic Manicure and Pedicure Training for the distressed workers.
The training is being held every Friday under beauty and nail expert Mel Marquez Sordian of Al Farasha Red Beauty Salon. She volunteered to teach the wards basic manicure and pedicure techniques, how to do acrylic nails, gel nails as well as manicure and pedicure spa tips.
“We are hoping that our little knowledge that is being shared to all these women will help them realize that there is more to being a household service worker. They can dream a little bit higher that tomorrow brings a bright new dawn to those who are willing to learn new things in the field of beauty or to enhance their existing skills,” disclosed Sordian,
Most of the wards at the shelter worked as Household Service Workers (HSWs) who left their employers after experiencing various forms of maltreatment such as physical, verbal or sexual abuse, non-payment of salaries, lack of food and overwork. There are more than 200 wards now at the shelter awaiting repatriation to the Philippines.
The POLO under the leadership of Labour Attache Alejandro Padaen thanked the AKO OFW for organising livelihood trainings that will help the wards start a new life when they go back to the Philippines
