King Pirates hold off Wayne State

Hyundai, Maranatha triumph

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 16: The PBLK 5’8” Division 8th Season continues with King Pirates holding off a late rally by the Wayne State, to come away with the win, 82-91, at the Hawally Disabled Sports Club on Friday.

Gerumudio did it all for King Pirates scoring 21 points and taking home the Best Player of the Game Award. His performanc­e also inspired an excellent showing from Samson and de Guzman who scored 19 and 15 points, respective­ly. Casas made 9 points for the team while Player #47 added 8. Player #03 chipped in with 6 points, while Antazo and Player #22 combined for 4 points to complete the King Pirates’ scoring squad.

Wayne State didn’t back down with three of its players scoring in double figures: Roxas (18 points), Yang (16 points), and Melvin (15 points). Flores scored 9 points and Villanueva showed up with 8 points, while Wayne contribute­d 6 points. Vin, Cordova, and Cerbo came up with a total of 6 points for the team.

The first quarter was a shootout with Roxas leading Wayne State, scoring 8 of his 18 points. King Pirates countered behind Gerumudio and Player #47, but fell short heading to the second quarter trailing by 2, 16-14.

King Pirates went full throttle in the second quarter scoring 29 big quarter points behind big offensive plays from Gerumudio and Casas. Wayne State fought back with 24 points, ending the first half behind by 3 points, 43-40.

The Pirates managed to maintain their momentum in the third quarter care of an offensive surge by Samson who scored 8 of his 19 points in this quarter. Wayne State rallied behind Roxas, but still trailed by 4 points heading into the fourth quarter, 66-62.

Wayne State had all things going for them in the fourth quarter, threatenin­g to overtake the King Pirates, behind late surge care of Roxas, Yang, Villanueva, and Flores, but the King Pirates held on to the lead until the buzzer. Pirates came away with the win, 82-81.

In other news in and around the PBLK, the Non-Leaguers Division saw three teams getting a win each: Hyundai (vs Camp Sawi, 73-67), Maranatha (vs Strikers, 77-59), and Triple STJ Logistics (Vs Kuwait Hunters, 74-61).

Meanwhile, the 35+ Super Fathers Division continued with Hotshots dominating NSD 2.0, 89-84.

Lastly, the Intercompa­ny Division came to the end of its regular games with Climbers beating Fil-Aseak, 89-66. The division semi-finals will kick off next Friday, Nov 17, 2017, with HEISCO facing B-Blades, and Desert Camp going head to head with Climbers.
