Taylor’s late bucket lifts Evansville over Fresno St 59-57

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, Nov 22, (AP): Unlike the previous night, Cincinnati didn’t need a hero on Tuesday night.

Instead, the 12th-ranked Bearcats relied on their defense, smothering Richmond in the first half and cruising into the championsh­ip game of the Cayman Islands Classic with a 75-48 win over the Spiders.

Cane Broome led a balanced attack with 13 points and Jacob Evans added 12 for the Bearcats (5-0).

Jarron Cumberland opened the scoring with 3-pointers on consecutiv­e possession­s and Evans hit another before the Spiders scored and when Justin Jenifer hit a 3 just beyond the fiveminute mark Cincinnati was up 14-4.

Buffalo 96, UAB 91 OT In George Town, Cayman Islands, Davonta Jordan kicked off the overtime period with a layup, all Buffalo’s remaining points came at the foul line and the Bulls rebounded from their first loss this season with a 96-91 win over UAB in OT at the Caymans Challenge on Tuesday night.

Buffalo (3-1) recovered from a 7367 loss to 12th-ranked Cincinnati to open the tournament on Monday.

After falling behind so quickly in the OT — Buffalo went up four in the first minute — UAB tried to catch up from long range but missed four 3-point attempts before Jalen Perry connected. But by then Buffalo was up by six with 28 seconds left.

Evansville 59, Fresno St 57 In Cancun, Mexico, Ryan Taylor scored 21 points, including the gamewinnin­g jumper with eight seconds left, and Evansville remains undefeated after a 59-57 victory over Fresno State on Tuesday night in the Cancun Challenge.

Fresno State’s Jaron Hopkins missed a 3-pointer with three-seconds left, and the Aces’ Dainius Chatkevici­us grabbed the rebound to end it.

Taylor was 9 of 19 from the floor and made three 3-pointers. Blake Simmons added 11 points for Evansville (5-0).

Deshon Taylor scored 12 points, and Bryson Williams added 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead Fresno State (2-2). Jahmel Taylor chipped in 11 points. Hopkins finished with just four points on 2-of-9 shooting. Louisiana Tech 77, George Mason 64

In Cancun, Mexico, Jacobi Boykins and Derric Jean combined for 35 points and Louisiana Tech led most of the way to defeat George Mason 77-64 on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Cancun Challenge.

Jalen Harris canned a 3-point shot to break an early 5-5 tie and Jean added another trey and Louisiana Tech (4-0) never looked back, building a 42-24 lead by halftime. Southeast Missouri St 74, Cal State 59

In Cancun, Mexico, Ledarrius Brewer made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points and Southeast Missouri State beat Cal State Northridge 74-59 on Tuesday at the Cancun Challenge.

Denzel Mahoney was 7-of-9 shooting and added 18 points while Ray Kowalski scored 10 points and Mark Laros grabbed nine rebounds to go with eight points. The Redhawks (2-2) shot 46 percent, including 42 percent from 3-point range (10 of 24). Wyoming 70,Louisiana-Lafayette 61

In George Town, Cayman Islands, Alexander Aka Gorski scored 16 points and undefeated Wyoming beat Louisiana-Lafayette 70-61 on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Cayman Islands Classic.

Aka Gorski made 3 of 6 3-point attempts and 5 of 6 from the line while Louis Adams added 14 points, Nyaires Redding made all eight of his free throws and scored 13 points and Alan Herndon finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Hayden Dalton, who had led the Cowboys (4-0) in scoring in their three previous games at 23.3 points per game, scored just two points with four rebounds in 23 minutes. Wyoming made 25 of 30 free throws but had 18 turnovers.

South Dakota St 80, Iowa 72 In George Town, Cayman Islands, freshman David Jenkins Jr. scored a season-high 23 points, including big baskets down the stretch, and South Dakota State fended off Iowa 80-72 in a consolatio­n-bracket semifinal at the Cayman Islands Classic on Tuesday.

Tevin King, a junior, added a careerhigh 16 points with seven rebounds and five steals. Reed Tellinghui­sen scored 15 points and Mike Daum 10. Montana St 74, Binghamton 64 In Cancun, Mexico, Tyler Hall scored 18 points and Montana State used a big second half to defeat Binghamton 74-64 on Tuesday in the opening game of the Cancun Challenge.

Harald Frey scored all 13 of his points in the second half, and Keljin Blevins also scored 13 points with eight rebounds for the Bobcats (3-2). Konner Frey added 10 points.
