Kuwait’s Speaker of Parliament stresses anti-terror coordination
Cairo hosts 3rd Confab of Arab Parliament, Parliamentary Speakers
CAIRO, Feb 10, (KUNA): Kuwaiti National Assembly (parliament) Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim said Saturday it is imperative for Arab parliaments to work together to defend Arab issues regionally and internationally.
Speaking to reporters following the Third Conference of Arab Parliament and Arab Parliamentary Speakers, AlGhanim said an Arab comprehensive document was adopted during the meeting, aiming at fighting extremism and terrorism.
The document will be referred to the 29th Arab Summit due in Riyadh next March for further discussions, Al-Ghanim added, hoping that it would be translated into concrete steps.
It refuted claims and allegations that the religion of Islam and Muslims have something to do with terrorism, the Kuwaiti parliament speaker emphasized.
In this regard, he quoted Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Gabriela Barron as stressing during the gathering that Islam is a religion of peace and the IPU rejects any attempt to link between terrorism and Islam.
He underlined the significance of periodical meetings among Arab parliaments, noting that coordination would enable everyone to notch up the aspired goals.
On Kuwait’s role in the fight against terrorism, he boasted that the State of Kuwait plays a significant and crucial part in coordination with all Arab countries in this regard.
Adopted
Kuwait has recently adopted terrorism as a top-priority issue of the UN Security Council (UNSC), the top Kuwaiti lawmaker pointed out.
Al-Ghanim reiterated full support to Egypt’s efforts to fight terrorism and maintain its security and stability.
Meanwhile, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmad Abul-Gheit has called for developing a more effective Arab mechanism to address terrorist threats.
In a keynote speech during the Third Conference of Arab Parliament and Arab Parliamentary Speakers, Abul-Gheit said the anti-terror mechanism should embrace security, financial, judicial, media and religious measures.
More concerned and continued Arab response is required for preventing terrorist plots and threats against Arab countries, he requested.
The conference is of paramount significance since it mainly aims at producing an all-out Arab strategy to fight terrorism and terrorist organizations and groups, he emphasized.
The chief of the Arab League hoped that the gathering would come up with concrete outcomes that reflect the size of historic responsibility that should be shouldered by the conferees as representatives of Arab people.
On his part, Arab Parliament Speaker Meshal Al-Sulami called for doubling Arab efforts to stand against the growing phenomenon of terrorism and extremism in the Arab region.
The conference reflects the due responsibility and role of Arab parliaments in the fight against terrorist threats to the Arab world in line with a fresh, all-out and deep strategy.
