Nylander scores twice as Maple Leafs edge Lightning

TORONTO, Feb 13, (AP): The Toronto Maple Leafs put together the perfect response to a big rally by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

They got right back to work. William Nylander had two goals and an assist and James van Riemsdyk scored a tiebreakin­g goal in the third period, sending streaking Toronto to a 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay on Monday night.

Host nation Qatar won a three-nation veterans’ football tournament after a 0-0 draw against Oman in the last match at Doha Stadium on Monday.

Qatar’s veterans claimed the trophy with four points after an earlier victory over Kuwait, who came second with three points.

Meanwhile, individual honours went to players from each of the sides.

Hussain Al-Mukaimi of Kuwait took best goalkeeper, Qatar’s Abdulaziz Hassan was top goalscorer and Oman’s Salem Jomaan the tournament’s best player. The event’s chief organiser Ali Al-Ali praised the gathering of the three neighbouri­ng nations, saying it was extremely successful and will continue next year. (KUNA)

Panthers 7, Oilers 5 In Edmonton, Alberta, Vincent Trocheck had three goals in the third period, Evgenii Dadonov scored twice and the Florida Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers 7-5 on Monday night.

Aaron Ekblad and Denis Malgin also scored for the Panthers, who have won five of their last six games.

Edmonton dropped its fourth straight game. Connor McDavid and Patrick Maroon each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, and Leon Draisaitl, Drake Caggiula and Anton Slepyshev also scored.

Florida scored four times in the third after the game was tied at 3 after two.

Trocheck went in alone and beat Cam Talbot for a tiebreakin­g powerplay goal 18 seconds into the period. He then made it 5-3 with another power-play goal at 6:05, and tacked on an empty-netter with a minute left for his 21st of the season.

Before Trocheck’s scoring display in the third, the Panthers and Oilers exchanged goals for most of the night.

Florida opened the scoring with 2:14 left to play in the first period when a shot came off the boards and Ekblad banked it in off Oilers defender Oscar Klefbom. It was the first of three power-play goals in four chances for the Panthers.

Maroon then tied it at 1 when he jumped on his own rebound and beat James Reimer for his 14th goal at 18:35.

The Oilers took the lead early in the second when Draisaitl was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down by Florida’s Nike Matheson on a shorthande­d breakaway. He made good on the opportunit­y with his 16th of the year.

The Panthers pulled even six minutes into the period when Malgin was left alone in the slot and scored on a shot that went off Talbot’s glove.
