Director General of Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research (KISR) Dr Samira Al-Seyyid Omar recently announced that the institute succeeded in producing four new breeds of potato that could withstand the local climate, reports AlAnba daily.
Dr Omar said the new development will consolidate production of the current 22 tons per hectare to 50-60 tons per hectare annually. She considered the achievement a major support toward accomplishing food sufficiency in Kuwait as regards the production of potato. She explained the scientific attainment was possible through improvement in farming technology to produce high quality potato. She added the project had been going on since 1996, and the new potato breeds have been confirmed globally after DNA testing by Great Britain’s National Institute of Agricultural Botany.
