Mississippi State’s 9th-inning HR ‘ousts’ FSU from NCAA regional

Freshman gives Fullerton 2-1 win vs Stanford

FLORIDA, June 3, (AP): Mississippi State got some MacNamee Magic. For Florida State, it was more misery for Mike Martin.

The No. 7 Seminoles became the first national seed eliminated from the NCAA Tournament when Elijah MacNamee hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Mississippi State a 3-2 walk-off win in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday.

Florida State, which lost to Samford on Friday, went 0-2 in the regionals as a top-eight national seed for the second time in five years.

Martin passed Augie Garrido as college baseball’s all-time coaching wins leader last month. His two-year contract expires this year, and he said he would meet with Athletic Director Stan Wilcox to determine whether he will be back for a 40th season.

If Martin returns, he would need 13 wins to reach 2,000 and would get another make Mississippi State 10-1 against teams ranked in the top 10.

Parrish returned to the mound in the ninth after a rain delay of more than two hours. Parrish had thrown 109 pitches through eight innings. Martin said pitching coach Mike Bell had Parrish throw every 15 minutes to stay loose during the delay, and he didn’t second-guess his decision to send him back out.

Meanwhile, freshman Jace Chamberlin hit a pinch-hit home run — the first homer of his career — in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 2-1 victory over No. 2 national seed Stanford on Saturday night in the NCAA Tournament.

Chamberlin, nicknamed “Jumbo” and listed by the school at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, launched a 2-0 pitch from Will Matthiessen (2-1) that easily cleared the fence in rightcenter field, with the ball glancing off the scoreboard and bouncing back onto the field as the jubilant Titans (34-23) stormed out of their dugout. Chamberlin raised his right fist and shouted as he rounded first base, then ripped off his helmet and slammed it as he passed third before being mobbed by his teammates at the plate.

The Titans (34-23) advanced to play the winner of an elimination game Sunday between Stanford (45-11) and Baylor. The Bears staved off elimination by beating Wright State 11-5 earlier in the day.

Brett Conine (4-1) pitched three innings in relief, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts for the win.

Daniel Cope’s sacrifice put the Titans up with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning, but Tim Tawa tied it for Stanford with an RBI triple in the sixth.
