KUWAIT CITY, June 21: Prompted by the proposal submitted by a number of MPs, the National Assembly will hold a special session on Sunday to discuss a set of committee reports and proposals deemed important such that they should not be postponed until the next legislative term.

Consequently, MP Khaled Al-Otaibi called on his colleagues and the government to ensure success of the session and finalize all items tabled for discussion.

He pointed out, “This is a great opportunity for us to approve a number of bills that directly affect the public before the parliamentary recess.”

The Assembly had earlier scheduled a special session on another day next week, but it is not enough to tackle some important matters which would have otherwise been moved to the next legislative term.

For this reason, sessions have been slated for the whole week in a bid to complete all items in the agenda; thereby, signaling the end of the current legislative term.

The government will attend the parliamentary session on June 24, which was scheduled as per the request of 13 MPs, to vote on six proposals endorsed by parliamentary committees, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Differences continue to prevail between the ministries of Interior and Justice over amendment of the law on the General Investigation Department; whereas the Public Institution for Social Security rejected amendments made by the Finance Ministry in the litigation on loan interest of the institution due to the high cost.

The government justified its rejection of the parliamentary amendments concerning appointments in leadership positions, citing rigid employment regulations and the need to achieve objectives.

The position taken by the Supreme Judicial Committee concurred with that of the Interior Ministry which rejected the parliamentary amendment of the Criminal Proceedings Law to reduce jail term, while the government through the Interior Ministry affirmed the law stipulates reduction of the period of life sentence.

The ministries of Interior and Justice have different views on the proposed amendment of investigation to promote the level of the attorney general and grant financial privileges to administration members.

The government side rejected the report of the committee in charge of people with special needs about the amendment on the Handicapped Law.

Meanwhile, sources from the Budgets Committee revealed that a study conducted by the oil sector aims to restructure the administration and financial sector.
