Deputy speaker remembers heroism of Kuwaiti martyrs

Kuwait-Iraq ties strong

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 1, (Agencies): Kuwaiti Deputy National Assembly Speaker Essa Al-Kandari recalled the bravery and sacrifice of Kuwaiti martyrs during the Iraqi Invasion in 1990.

“In the 28th anniversary of the Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait, we remember the sacrifice of our martyrs and the support of the international community for Kuwait during its crisis. This should be a reminder for us to put aside our political differences,” Al-Kandari said in a press statement on Wednesday.

He hoped that Kuwaiti people would all unite under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber AlSabah.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Embassy in Kuwait affirmed its non-interference in the internal affairs of Kuwait, stressing its keenness for enhancing the relations between the two countries, reports Al-Qabas daily.

In a press statement, the embassy indicated that Iraq and Kuwait have been consolidating their joint efforts to strengthen the bilateral relations and start building plans for the benefit of both countries and the region in the near future.

The embassy said it wishes to clarify that the ambassador’s meeting with a Kuwaiti newspaper was aimed at supporting the new direction towards building normal sisterly relations with Kuwait and her people, and trying to mitigate the effects of the historical crises.

It said, “While the embassy is aware that the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the decisions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League call the invasion as “the Iraqi invasion”, what was raised by us is nothing more than the embassy’s wish to refer to the invasion as “Saddam Invasion” for several considerations which favor the interests of the two countries. It does not intend omission and transgression on the facts of history but aims to reach a bright future for the coming generations as well as for the region”.

The embassy affirmed about a desire to put forward the initiative of the State of Kuwait to change the name of the “Iraqi invasion” to the “Saddam invasion”.

It insisted that the statements were not intended to interfere in the internal affairs of the sisterly country Kuwait, affirming the depth of Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations, their importance and mutual respect.

The embassy highlighted that the oppressed Iraqi people were not in favor of the invasion against a sisterly and neighboring country, pointing to the positions of a national resistance force that condemned the invasion.

In another report, the Head of Kuwait Society for Public Relations Jamal AlNasrallah says the brutal Iraqi invasion of Kuwait did not succeed in breaking the will of Kuwaitis but instead helped them figure out thousands of reasons to achieve advancement and development of their country, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

He affirmed that Kuwait learnt its lesson well and overcame the shock quickly, adding that Kuwait, prior to the invasion, was very peaceful and beautiful but after the invasion, it became strong and powerful.

Al-Nasrallah said the painful experience of the Iraqi invasion led Kuwait to enhance its relations with various countries around the world as well as conduct an integrated developmental system in all fields.

He stressed that Kuwait, with the guidance and wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, managed to improve its place among the world’s countries, adding that Kuwait continues to exist despite the attempts of the dictator of Iraq to eradicate it from the world map.
