Murray adds China Open to schedule

Wozniacki withdraws from Citi Open with leg injury

-

WASHINGTON, Aug 1, (RTRS): Former world number one Andy Murray has added the China Open to his schedule in October as he continues his return from hip surgery earlier this year.

Murray, who played three matches in late June but withdrew from Wimbledon as it came too early in his recovery process, made his return to hardcourt tennis on Monday at the Washington Open where he battled to a first-round victory over Mackenzie McDonald.

“The China Open ... has announced the entry of three-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one Andy Murray to the 2018 player field,” tournament organisers said on their website.

Murray, who will face fellow Briton Kyle Edmund in the second round of the Washington Open, is expected to play in Toronto and Cincinnati before the final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open.

The China Open, which will be held from Oct 1 to 7, will also feature current world number one and defending champion Rafa Nadal and Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki was forced out of the Citi Open with a leg injury on Tuesday, withdrawing from the Washington, DC tournament just ahead of her first round match.

The world number two and top seed had been scheduled to face Ukrainian qualifier Anhelina Kalinina in the first match of the evening session, but pulled out with what the WTA website described as a right leg injury.

The match would have been the first of the Dane’s North American hardcourt campaign, leading up to the US Open. Wozniacki was replaced in the draw by Belgian lucky loser Ysaline Bonaventure. but have the least sponsors. This partnership will inspire us more.”

Financial details of the deal were not announced but Tata Motors said they will also support top performing 50 wrestlers, both men and women, on both domestic and international circuit as part of the deal.

Iraq have withdrawn from the football tournament of this month’s Asian Games in Jakarta, potentially throwing the competition into turmoil less than two weeks before kickoff.

The Iraq Olympic Committee have pulled the team from the event, according to a source in Baghdad, and the decision will leave officials needing to address an imbalance in the opening phase of the tournament.

Last week the Asian Football Confederation conducted a redraw of the competition’s group stage to add Palestine and the United Arab Emirates after the pair had been left off the original entry list.

That meant two of the six groups swelled from four teams to five, but Iraq’s withdrawal now means one group — containing China, Timor Leste and Syria — will feature just three countries.

The Olympic Council of Asia, the organisers of the Asian Games, have yet to respond to a request from Reuters for comment.
