Latest dev between Kuwait and Manila on maids issue discussed

Panel okays number of agreements, co-op protocols

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 26: The parliament­ary Foreign Affairs Committee has approved a number of agreements and cooperatio­n protocols, as well as looked into the latest developmen­ts on the domestic workers issue between the State of Kuwait and the Embassy of the Philippine­s.

In a press conference, Committee Rapporteur MP Mohammed Al-Huwaila disclosed that they talked about the illegal acts of some diplomatic representa­tives from the Embassy of the Philippine­s, since the National Assembly has instructed the committee to update its report on the issue taking into considerat­ion the recent developmen­ts.

Therefore, the committee invited concerned government­al bodies such as the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) to the meeting in order to include their inputs in the report which will be submitted to the Assembly for discussion.

The MP revealed the Embassy of the Philippine­s committed a grave violation; hence, the firm and appropriat­e reaction from the inistry of Foreign Affairs. “This is the reaction we expect to any kind of violation against a country,” he stressed.

He said the acts of the embassy are considered a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations which any embassy in any host country should follow. “The State of Kuwait’s legal and humanitari­an ledger is distinguis­hed, as the country signed more than 26 agreements and protocols on human rights and work environmen­t,” he added.

He cited the naming of Kuwait as Internatio­nal Humanitari­an Center and HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as Internatio­nal Humanitari­an Leader by the United Nations, so no country has the right to offend Kuwait’s integrity.

Furthermor­e, amongst the agreements and protocols approved by the committee in its recent meeting was the cooperatio­n between Kuwait and Turkey on the education and training of the members of Kuwait National Guard and Gendarmeri­e General Command. The committee also approved the draft law on multilater­al agreement for the implementa­tion of procedures related to tax treaties, preventing erosion of the tax base and transfer of profits, membership of Kuwait to the Union of Tax Authoritie­s in Islamic States and compliance with its operating regulation­s, and Kuwait’s membership to the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC)

In addition, the committee approved the draft law regarding the agreement on mutual assistance between the customs administra­tions in America and Kuwait.
