Leonard sits out Raptors ‘preseason’ home debut

TORONTO, Oct 6, (AP): Kawhi Leonard’s debut in his new home arena will have to wait.

Leonard was one of the regulars who rested Friday night, when the Toronto Raptors defeated Melbourne United 120-82. The Raptors scheduled five preseason games this season, but Friday’s was the only one that’ll be played in Toronto.

Kyle Lowry also got the night off for the Raptors, who don’t play again in Toronto until the season-opener Oct 17 against Cleveland.

“You bring 20 guys to camp, it’s a little difficult to get all of them a decent look,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. “There’s also a chance now to give some long extended minutes to some other guys.”

Melbourne stayed with Toronto for much of the first half. After 18 minutes, Toronto’s lead was 34-31. Over the next 18 minutes, the Raptors outscored their Australian guests 67-27 and took a 101-58 lead into the fourth quarter.

76ers 120, Mavericks 114 J.J. Redick was 10 for 10 from the field, 7 for 7 from 3-point range, and led all scorers with 28 points off the bench for Philadelph­ia in the opener of the China Games.

Joel Embiid finished with 22 points for Philadelph­ia (3-0). Dennis Smith Jr scored 20 for Dallas (1-1).

Magic 119, Flamengo 82 Aaron Gordon scored 29 points and grabbed eight assists in 24 minutes, shooting 10 for 12 from the field and leading Orlando to an easy win over the Brazilian club Flamengo.

Flamengo had a pair of notable former NBA players; Anderson Varejao finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Leandro Barbosa scored eight points.

The teams made a combined 91 percent of their free throws – 21 of 22 by the Magic, 21 of 24 by Flamengo.

Thunder 113, Timberwolv­es 101 Paul George made his preseason debut and scored 13 of his 23 points in the first quarter, and Oklahoma City never trailed.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 23 points for Minnesota. But Andrew Wiggins struggled, scoring four points on 2 for 9 shooting in 28 minutes. Wizards 121, Heat 114 Bradley Beal led six Washington players in double figures with 20 points, and the Wizards outscored Miami 70-55 in the second half.

Knicks 106, Pelicans 100 Tim Hardaway Jr scored 21 points and Enes Kanter added 20 points and 15 rebounds for New York, which has played three down-to-the-wire games in as many outings so far in this preseason.

Kevin Knox (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Noah Vonleh (10 points, 11 rebounds) also had double-doubles for the Knicks.

Ashley Moyer-Gleich, one of two women selected by the NBA as nonstaff referees to start this season, was part of the crew on the game.

Grizzlies 120, Hawks 110 Marc Gasol scored 21 points and MarShon Brooks scored 18 off the bench for Memphis, which scored 29 points off Atlanta turnovers.

Memphis led 113-84 with 7:54 left, before the Hawks outscored the Grizzlies 26-7 the rest of the way and got within nine points in the final minute. Tyler Dorsey led the Hawks with 18 points.

Memphis (1-1) hosts Indiana on Saturday.

Spurs 117, Pistons 91 Dejounte Murray scored 16 points for San Antonio, and Rudy Gay scored seven points in a 14-0 first-quarter run that put the Spurs in control.

LaMarcus Aldridge added 14 points for the Spurs. Andre Drummond led Detroit with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Nuggets 96, Wildcats 88 Rookie Monte Morris had 15 points and nine assists, Malik Beasley added 14 points with four 3-pointers and the Denver Nuggets avoided becoming the first NBA team to lose to an internatio­nal squad since 2016.

Bryce Cotton kept the Perth Wildcats in it with five 3-pointers and 33 points. His 3-pointer with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter pulled Perth to 66-63. The Wildcats got as close as 6968 in the second half.

Jazz 129, 36ers 99 Donovan Mitchell was 7 of 14 from the floor for 18 points – all in the first half – and Utah cruised in its final preseason home game.

Nathan Sobey led the Adelaide 36ers with 25 points as all five starters had at least nine points.

Trail Blazers 115, Suns 93 Jusuf Nurkic had 16 points and nine rebounds for Portland in a battle with No. 1 overall pick DeAndre Ayton.

Ayton led Phoenix with 19 points and 14 rebounds in 23 minutes. then struck out Gleyber Torres to end the sixth.

Workman opened the seventh by allowing singles to Andrew McCutchen and Aaron Judge.

Matt Barnes took over and threw a wild pitch to advance the runners before allowing a run on Voit’s groundout.

Rick Porcello recorded the first two outs in the eighth, and Craig Kimbrel allowed a leadoff homer to Judge in the ninth before securing the four-out save.

The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead when Martinez homered over the Green Monster in left field off J.A. Happ (0-1).

Boston opened the third with a double from Betts and a single by Andrew Benintendi to knock out Happ.

Steve Pearce made it 4-0 with a single to left off Chad Green, and Xander Bogaerts followed one out later with a sacrifice fly.

In his fourth career postseason start, Happ allowed five runs on four hits in two-plus innings.

The Yankees lost starting center fielder Aaron Hicks to right hamstring tightness in the fourth. He was lifted after opening the inning with a single.

Astros 7, Indians 2 In Houston, Alex Bregman slugged his fifth career postseason home run, and right-hander Justin Verlander delivered a strong start for Houston, which claimed Game 1 of its ALDS against visiting Cleveland.

Game 2 on Saturday will see Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco oppose Astros righty Gerrit Cole.

Bregman was the first of four Astros to smack solo home runs, with George Springer and Jose Altuve hitting back-to-back homers in the fifth inning off Indians righthande­r Corey Kluber (0-1). Martin Maldonado added a leadoff homer to ignite the Astros’ two-run seventh.

Verlander (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 5-1/3 innings. He tired in the sixth, throwing 27 pitches while loading the bases for right-hander Ryan Pressly, who uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Yan Gomes to score. Jose Ramirez restored the lead to 14 with a 34-yard floater to a double-covered Josh Gordon with 9:19 remaining. It was Gordon’s first score for New England and Brady’s 500th career touchdown pass, eight back of Brett Favre for second on the all-time list. Peyton Manning is first with 539.

The Patriots (3-2) put it away just over two minutes later. One play after Jonathan Jones intercepte­d a pass that went off Colts wideout Zach Pascal’s hands, Patriots rookie Sony Michel romped 34 yards to make it 38-17.

James White totaled 10 catches for 77 yards and a score. Julian Edelman had seven grabs for 57 yards in his first regular-season game since 2016. He missed 2017 with a torn ACL and the first four games this year due to a PED suspension.

The Colts managed just a 54-yard Adam Vinatieri field goal before halftime. Vinatieri missed an earlier attempt off the left upright from 38 yards.

Milwaukee’s Game 1 win with a walk-off single in the 10th, scored one run and drove in another to highlight the Brewers’ offense. Chacin (1-0) worked the first five innings, limiting the Rockies to three hits. He also walked three and struck out three.

Left-hander Tyler Anderson (0-1) went six innings, charged with one run and four hits. He walked two and struck out five. Nolan Arenado and Gerardo Parra had two hits each for the Rockies, who have totaled just six runs in their last four games.

Dodgers 3, Braves 0 In Los Angeles, Clayton Kershaw went eight shutout innings, and Manny Machado and Yasmani Grandal hit home runs as Los Angeles took a commanding 2-0 lead in its NLDS with a victory over visiting Atlanta.

Los Angeles will go for the sweep Sunday at Atlanta. Right-hander Walker Buehler will pitch for the Dodgers opposite Braves righty Kevin Gausman.

Kershaw (1-0) led the Dodgers to their second consecutiv­e shutout in the series after earning a 6-0 victory in Game 1 on Thursday. The only other major league team to open a postseason series with back-to-back shutouts was the 1921 New York Giants.

Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth inning to earn the save. Braves starter Anibal Sanchez (0-1) gave up three runs on five hits over 4-2/3 innings with a walk and three strikeouts.
