Sigurdsson’s ‘dazzling’ 50th goal sinks 10-man Leicester

Wolves sink Palace

LONDON, Oct 6, (Agencies): Gylfi Sigurdsson struck a glorious 77thminute winner to earn Everton a 2-1 win at 10man Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Icelander skilfully turned James Maddison before curling a long-distance effort past Kasper Schmeichel – his 50th Premier League goal – to end Leicester’s fading resistance after they had lost captain Wes Morgan to two yellow cards.

Everton took the lead deservedly after seven minutes with a brilliant goal made in Brazil as Bernard produced dazzling skill on the counterattack to set up Richarlison.

Ricardo Pereira, on his 25th birthday, opened his account for Leicester in the 40th minute with a superb individual equalizer but Morgan’s 63rd-minute dismissal – both yellows were for fouls on Richarlison – ended their ambitions.

Crystal Palace still hasn’t scored at home in the Premier League this season after losing 1-0 on Saturday

to Wolverhampton.

Promoted Wolves continued its impressive start to move to 15 points – with four wins and three draws – after eight rounds. Palace has seven points.

Wolves became the first team ever in the Premier League to name an unchanged starting lineup throughout its first eight rounds, and manager Nuno Espirito Santo was rewarded when Matt Doherty’s goal secured the three points in the 56th minute.

Wolves had wasted clear chances to take the lead during the first half. Raul Jimenez was guilty of squandering a counter-attack when he dragged a low shot, from the edge of the area, harmlessly wide of the far left post. Diogo Jota was clean through on Wayne Hennessey when, amid the hosts’ calls for offside, Jota could only watch as the Palace goalkeeper spread himself to brilliantly save.

Palace has been struggling in the absence of the injured Christian Benteke and offered minimal attacking threat.

The only goal of the game came in the second half when Doherty played a one-two with Jimenez to shake off Patrick van Aanholt and then, at the near post from a narrow angle, routinely finished beyond Hennessey with a low shot toward the far left corner.

Huddersfield moved off the bottom of the English Premier League standings after drawing with Burnley 1-1 on Saturday.

Christopher Schindler’s first league goal tied the score in the 66th minute, and ended up giving visiting Huddersfield only its third point in the league.

Huddersfield was the more impressive side, though it took almost an hour for it to turn dominating

possession into a shot on target.

Burnley, seeking a third straight win, scored in the first half through Sam Vokes, who could face retrospective disciplinary action for an elbow on Schindler.

Josh King struck twice as Bournemouth continued their best start to a Premier League season to earn their biggest top-flight away win with a 4-0 thumping of 10man Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

The battle between the league’s two biggest surprise packets turned into an unexpected one-sided romp for Eddie Howe’s men, who were inspired by their attacking duo of Callum Wilson and King and aided by the 32nd-minute sending off of Christian Kabasele.

David Brooks put the Cherries ahead after a swift 14th- minute counter before a double blow for Watford saw Kabasele dismissed for bringing down King, who picked himself up to score from the penalty spot.

King combined with Wilson for Bournemouth’s third just before the break before Wilson deservedly got in on the scoring act just after the restart to push the Cherries up to fifth place.
