Kuwait pledges to support bid to protect kids rights
‘Special attention paid to family’
NEW YORK, Oct 13, (KUNA): Kuwait has affirmed its commitment to promote and support all efforts exerted by countries and organizations to protect children’s rights.
This came during a speech by member of the Kuwaiti permanent delegation to the UN headquarters in New York, diplomat Sara Al-Zoman to the third Committee of the UN General Assembly.
The year 2019 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Convention on Children’s rights, said Al-Zoman.
She affirmed that promoting children’s rights was an integral part of held the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
The goals would ensure quality education, eliminate child labor and eliminate all forms of violence against children, she added.
Al-Zoman noted that the international community faced many challenges to safeguard children’s rights despite progress in protecting children and enabling them to participate in sustainable development. She shared concern with the representatives of the Secretary General on the increasing cases of abuse against children due to forced displacement, violence, natural disasters, poverty, and armed conflicts.
Most of these children lack access to appropriate medical care, quality education, proper nutrition and protection, she said.
Al-Zoman also agreed with the reports, which necessitated the protection of children, and stressed that it was not only a moral and legal duty, but also an essential factor in peace-building and preservation.
She pointed out that the sale and sexual exploitation of children was considered to be one of the most spiteful forms of violence and a blatant violation of the children’s rights to grow in a healthy family environment, calling for concerted international efforts to protect children from exploitation especially through the Internet.
Al-Zoman also called for sharing the best practices in strengthening child protection systems through social services to eliminate all forms of violence against children.
Kuwait is paying special attention to the protection of the family, which is the natural environment for the growth and well-being of all its members, especially children, she indicated.
She added that Kuwait hosted last year the International Conference on the suffering of the Palestinian child under Israeli occupation, a pivotal event geared towards the protection of children’s rights.
