Kuwait, Jordan join efforts to up UNRWA vote win bid
Speaker, UAE official hold talks
GENEVA, Oct 14, (KUNA): Kuwaiti National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim announced the agreement to merge the Kuwaiti and Jordanian proposals related to the deficit in the budget of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Al-Ghanim made his remarks after his participation in the coordination meetings of the Arab and Islamic groups held in Geneva on the sidelines of the 139th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The two proposals were merged into one to increase the chances of winning the vote, he added.
He noted that other geopolitical groups (African, Latin American and European) agreed to form a coordination committee, adding that the vote will take place Monday in the General Assembly of the Union.
Kuwait’s top lawmaker thanked the members of the Kuwaiti parliamentary delegation and the General Secretariat of the National Assembly’s staff for their efforts to achieve Kuwait goals and support the Arab Islamic nations.
National Assembly chief arrived in Geneva on Saturday to participate in the 139th Session of the InterParliamentary Union (IPU) scheduled on Oct 14-18. The Kuwaiti delegation includes several parliamentary officials.
Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait Marzouq Al-Ghanim met in Geneva Saturday with President of the UAE’s Federal National Council Dr Amal Qubaisi.
The meeting occurred on the sideline of the 139th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) scheduled between Oct 14 and 18.
The two Arab parliamentarians focused their discussions on coordinating Arab and Islamic efforts during the course of the IPU meeting.
The latest developments within the regional and international spheres were also discussed.
Kuwaiti MPs Rakan Al-Nesf, Safaa Al-Hashim and Kuwaiti permanent representative to the UN and International organization’s headquarters in Geneva Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim attended the meeting.
