Louisville overpowers Kentucky

EAST LANSING, Michigan, Dec 10, (AP): Jenna Allen scored 27 points – including a big 3-pointer the final minute – and Michigan State handed No. 3 Oregon its first loss of the season, 8882 on Sunday.

Up by three late in the fourth quarter, the Spartans (8-1) ran the shot clock down and got the ball to Allen, who sank a 3-pointer with 34.7 seconds left, then ran down the court with her arms outstretch­ed, holding three fingers out with each hand.

Sabrina Io- nescu scored 29 points for Oregon, and Erin Boley added 24, but the Ducks (7-1) didn’t start defending well until the final quarter, and Michigan State made enough shots late to pull out the win.

In Louisevill­e, Kentucky, Asia Durr scored 32 points and made the first of several critical free throws down the stretch for Louisville.

The Cardinals (10-0) appeared to have the game in control with an 18-point lead midway through the third quarter and a 67-52 lead entering the fourth. But Kentucky (9-1) rallied to within four twice in the final 30 seconds as Louisville missed a series of free throws.

Rhyne Howard had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Kentucky.

In Corvallis, Oregon, Destiny Slocum had 12 points with four 3-pointers and added 10 assists and Oregon State overpowere­d Santa Clara.

Kat Tudor had 14 points, also making four 3-pointers, and seven rebounds, and Madison Washington had a career-high 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting for the Beavers (7-1).

Ashlyn Herlihy scored 10 points, and Tia Hay had seven for the Broncos (5-3).

In Austin, Texas, Meme Jackson scored a career-best 33 points, Evina Westbrook had 23 and Tennessee beat Texas.

Jackson made two free throws with 21.6 seconds left to give Tennessee (80) a five-point lead.

Audrey Warren had a season-best 21 points for Texas (7-2), and Danni Williams scored all 14 of her points in the second half.

In Chesnut Hill, Massachuse­tts, Destiny Pitts scored a career-high 35 points and Minnesota used an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to beat Boston College.

Minnesota (9-0) is off to its best start since the ‘03-04 team went 15-0 and the ‘02-03 team went 12-0, both when first-year coach Lindsay Whalen was a player.

Taylor Ortlepp hit six 3-pointers and scored 25 points for BC (8-2).

In Fort Collins, Colorado, Courtney Ekmark scored 21 points, Reili Richardson grabbed 11 rebounds and Arizona State beat Colorado State.

Ekmark scored nine of the Sun Devils’ first 14 points – all on 3-pointers – en route to a 14-5 lead. Arizona State (7-2) led 24-12 at the end of the first quarter then proceeded to hold the Rams to single-digit scoring over the next two quarters.

Lena Svanholm and Mollie Mounsey each scored 11 points for Colorado State (4-4).

In Evanston, Illinois, Allazia Blockton scored 21 points and became Marquette’s career-scoring leader.

Blockton’s layup at 4:18 of the fourth quarter gave her 1,942 points. After passing Krystal Ellis (2009), she added four more points.

Natisha Hiedeman added 17 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block for Marquette (7-2). Lindsey Pulliam had 15 points for Northweste­rn (6-3).

In Norman, Oklahoma, Mart’e Grays scored a career-high 26 points for DePaul.

Ashton Millender added 19 points for the Blue Demons (7-3). Shaina Pellington and Taylor Robertson had 19 points apiece for the Sooners (3-6) and Madi Williams added 18.

In St Louis, Sophie Cunningham had 18 points and eight assists and Missouri held off Saint Louis.

Amber Smith added 16 points and 13 rebounds to help the Tigers (8-2) win their fifth in a row. Ciaja Harbison led Saint Louis (4-6) with 18 points.

In Spokane, Washington, LeeAnne Wirth scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting for Gonzaga.

Jill Townsend and Katie Campbell each had 11 points and Laura Stockton, Zykera Rice and Chandler Smith scored 10 apiece for Gonzaga. The Bulldogs (9-1) are off to the best start in program history, and have won three in a row against Washington State (45) and five straight overall.

Borislava Hristova led Washington State with 19 points.

In Coral Gables, Florida, Beatrice Mompremier had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Sarah Mortensen hit five 3-pointers for 15 points for Miami.

Emese Hof added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Hurricanes (8-2). No player reached double figures for the Privateers (3-4).

TORONTO, Dec 10, (RTRS): Malcom Brogdon made two 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter, including the one for the go-ahead points with 40.7 seconds to play, and the visiting Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Toronto Raptors 104-99 on Sunday night.

Brogdon finished with 18 points for the Bucks, who have twice defeated the Raptors this season.

Giannis Antetokoun­mpo scored 19 points and grabbed 19 rebounds for the Bucks and Brook Lopez also had 19 points while Khris Middleton and Tony Snell scored 10 each.

Serge Ibaka scored 22 points, Kawhi Leonard had 20, Fred VanVleet scored 19 and Pascal Siakam added 17 for the Raptors, who have lost two in a row.

Kyle Lowry did not score a point for the Raptors for the first time since March 13, 2013, against the Miami Heat.

The Bucks led by 11 points early in the fourth, but Ibaka’s 3-pointer brought the Raptors to within three at 90-87 with 5:18 left.

VanVleet’s 3-pointer put Toronto up by two with 3:13 to go.

Middleton’s two free throws tied the game at 94 with 2:23 to play, but Toronto regained the lead on Leonard’s 3-pointer. Brogdon tied the game with a 3-pointer, then gave Milwaukee the lead with the other 3-pointer.

VanVleet’s layup trimmed the lead to one with 28.9 seconds left.

Antetokoun­mpo’s driving dunk returned the lead to three points with 12.6 seconds to play before Leonard missed a 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds to play that would have tied the game.

Thon Maker’s 3-pointer ended the scoring in the first quarter with the Raptors leading 30-25.

Lopez hit successive 3-pointers and Snell made a free throw and Milwaukee led 51-49 at halftime.

Lopez had 16 first-half points, Ibaka and VanVleet topped Toronto with 11 points.

Milwaukee led by three points when Middleton banked in a two-foot hook shot with 3:22 left in the third quarter. The lead reached seven when Ersan Ilyasova made two free throws with 1:15 remaining

The Bucks led 79-74 after three quarters.

In San Antonio, DeMar DeRozen scored 26 points, and Rudy Gay added 23 points and a career-high-tying 15 rebounds, as the San Antonio Spurs pulled away late for a 110-97 victory over the visiting Utah Jazz on Sunday.

The win was the second straight for the Spurs and allowed them consecutiv­e victories for the first time since winning four straight in an eight-day span Oct 27-Nov 3.

Back-to-back buckets by the Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell to start the final period cut San Antonio’s advantage to 82-76 and his jumper at the 9:33 mark made it a five-point game, but that’s as close as Utah would get.

Two baskets by LaMarcus Aldridge keyed a 9-4 Spurs’ run before a turnaround jumper by Gay staked San Antonio to a 101-91 lead with 4:53 to play.

The Jazz then missed their next four shots while Gay hit a basket and a free throw, and Derrick White hit a jumper to grant San Antonio a 106-99 advantage that was more than enough to carry it to the finish line.

Aldridge added 20 points for the Spurs, with Bryn Forbes scoring 15 points and Marco Belinelli hitting for 10 for San Antonio, which shot 52.8 percent from the floor.

Mitchell led the Jazz with 27 points, while Ricky Rubio scored 26 and Rudy Gobert added 12 for Utah, which had a two-game winning streak snapped.

San Antonio led by five at the end of the first quarter but took the game right at the Jazz in the second, reeling off the first seven points to assume a 30-18 advantage. The Spurs led 54-36 at halftime as DeRozan scored 16 and Aldridge hit for 14 points. Thabo Sefolosha paced the Jazz with just nine points at intermissi­on.

Mitchell hit his first basket of the game on the Jazz’s opening trip of the third quarter and his 3-pointer with 7:32 to play in the period pulled Utah to within 12 points, at 67-55. When Rubio hit a spinning layup with 2:51 left in the third, the Jazz cut the lead to 10 points.

San Antonio returns to the floor for the third of a six-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Phoenix. The Jazz play the second game of a demanding road back-to-back on Monday in Oklahoma City.

In Detroit, Jrue Holiday and Julius Randle combined to score 65 points to overcome a limited performanc­e from Anthony Davis as the visiting New Orleans Pelicans edged the Detroit Pistons 116-108 on Sunday.

Holiday had 37 points and Randle had 28 while Davis was limited to six points in 26 minutes as he played through an injured hip suffered in the first quarter. Tim Frazier added 14 points and Nikola Mirotic scored 12 off the bench as the Pelicans won for the third time in five games.

Blake Griffin scored 35 points, backup Langston Galloway added 24 and Andre Drummond had 23 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Pistons, who lost their fourth straight after a five-game winning streak.

Detroit got within two points early in the fourth quarter, but 3-pointers by Frazier and Holiday helped New Orleans rebuild the lead to 105-96 with five minutes remaining.

Drummond made two baskets as the Pistons closed within 109-104 with two minutes left, but Mirotic answered with a jumper.

The Pelicans led by six at halftime and back-to-back layups by Randle and Mirotic pushed the lead to 10 at the start of the third quarter.

The Pistons closed within six on a 3-pointer by Griffin before Frazier had four points and an assist as New Orleans extended its lead to 78-62.

Griffin scored eight points and Galloway had 10 to pull Detroit within four points before Frazier’s buzzerbeat­ing 3-pointer gave the Pelicans a 91-84 lead after three quarters.

Holiday scored 11 points as New Orleans took a 28-20 lead after the first quarter. Davis had just three points in six minutes after hurting his hip in a collision with Griffin.

E’Twaun Moore opened the secondquar­ter scoring with a basket and a 10-point Pelicans lead.

The Pistons cut the lead to three and the margin fluctuated between four and eight points throughout the second quarter before New Orleans took a 5650 halftime lead.

In New York, Kemba Walker scored 25 points before sitting out the entire fourth quarter and the Charlotte Hornets rolled to an easy 119-107 victory over the host New York Knicks on Sunday night.

Walker, a native New Yorker, turned his only scheduled appearance in Madison Square Garden this season into another great performanc­e. He finished 8 of 20 from the field, hit four 3-pointers, and added six rebounds, six assists and four steals.

The Hornets (13-13) won their second straight, following up an impressive home win over Denver on Friday night.

They never trailed and led by as many as 28 in the third quarter. It was their first wire-to-wire win of the season.

The Hornets also got 19 points from Jeremy Lamb, 16 points from Tony Parker, 13 points from Marvin Williams and 12 points from Cody Zeller. They shot 48.3 percent from the field and were 23 of 27 from the free-throw line (85.2 percent).

Kevin Knox led the Knicks with 26 points off the bench. The Knicks also got 21 points from Tim Hardaway Jr and 18 from Frank Ntilikina. They lost Coach David Fizdale when Fizdale was ejected midway through the fourth quarter for arguing with the officials.

The Knicks (8-20) have now lost four straight.

Charlotte led 27-24 after one quarter, then led by as many as 18 in the second quarter before settling for a 61-47 halftime lead. The Hornets then opened the third quarter with a 16-2 run to make it 77-49. Charlotte eventually led 99-78 after three quarters.

The Hornets will be off until Wednesday when they will host Detroit. The Knicks, who were coming off a loss to Brooklyn on Saturday, will also be idle until Wednesday when they travel to Cleveland.
