Kuwait renews full support for ‘reconstruction’ of Iraq
Al-Otaibi calls on nations to commit to pledges
NEW YORK, Aug 29, (KUNA): Kuwait has renewed its full support for Iraq to reconstruct the country and overcome damage, as part of pledges made in Kuwait’s international conference for the reconstruction of Iraq.
The remarks were made by Kuwait’s permanent Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Mansour Al-Otaibi, during the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) session on Iraq late Wednesday.
He called on all countries who took part in the conference to commit to their pledges, adding that he looks forward to cooperate with Iraq in closely monitoring the implementation of these pledges.
The two countries aim to overcome the dark past and share a new beginning, Al-Otaibi said. He noted that the visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Iraq last June is a push forward for the two sides’ relations.
Meanwhile, he applauded Iraq’s commitment to its international pledges towards Kuwait, issued by the UNSC.
The Kuwaiti diplomat affirmed Kuwait is willing to help Iraq speed up the execution of these pledges, especially the humanitarian section involved with finding the missing Kuwaitis and other countries’ nationals. He added that 236 out of 605 missing were identified.
He called for further efforts and cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to locate more burial sites.
As for stolen Kuwaiti property, Al-Otaibi said that progress is still slow in this file. However, he welcomed Iraq’s delivery of 42,000 out of about 160,000 stolen books to Kuwait.
Moreover, the ambassador expressed keenness over the recent positive developments in Iraq, including a level of political, economic and security stability.
