‘Uzbekistan seeks closer energy, economic relations with Kuwait’

‘Kuwait keen for Asian prosperity’

By Nawab Khan BRUSSELS, Sept 28, (KUNA): Uzbekistan is interested in developing its energy and economic cooperatio­n with Kuwait, said Jurabek Mirzamakmu­dov, First Deputy Minister of Energy in Uzbekistan and Director General of Uzatom (The Uzbek Agency for Nuclear Energy), in Brussels.

“We are in close discussion­s with Kuwait companies. Our ambassador (in Kuwait) is active on this,” he told a seminar on Uzbekistan in the Belgian capital.

The Uzbek official was the keynote speaker at a seminar on “The Future of Uzbekistan: Highlighti­ng Energy Potentials”, organized by the Brussels-based think-tank European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS).

A few companies from Kuwait are also interested in renewable energy, said the Deputy Minister, adding in a reply to a question by Kuwait News Agency (KUNA),”We have negotiatio­ns with them. They have visited several plants.”

“We are looking for Kuwaiti investment­s not only in energy sector, but in food processing and other areas,” he noted.

The Uzbek Deputy Minister, in his speech, explained the various strategies to develop the country’s energy sector and encourage potential internatio­nal cooperatio­n.

A senior official at the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry took part Friday in the Asia Cooperatio­n Dialogue (ACD) meeting held on the sideline of the 74th UN General Assembly in New York.

Assistant Minister for the Affairs of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah’s office Dr Ahmad Nasser Al-Muhammad Al-Sabah AlSabah stressed during his speech to the meeting the importance of boosting cooperatio­n amongst Asian nations especially within the economic mainframe.

Kuwait is very eager to contribute to Asian economic prosperity, he affirmed, adding that this was evident in the hosting of the very first ACD meeting in Kuwait.

The headquarte­r of the ACD’s General Secretaria­t is also located in Kuwait, another example of the Gulf country’s commitment to the cause of Asian cooperatio­n, he affirmed.
