Several MPs continue to comment on partisan lines in university polls

‘Tribal based elections will make society move backwards’

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 30: Several MPs continued to comment on partisan scenes which prevailed in the elections of student movements; asserting such scenes negatively affect social cohesion, diversity and tolerance that dominated the Kuwaiti society throughout history, reports Al-Nahar daily.

MP Khaled Al-Shatti pointed out that tribalism in the university elections is not new, as it reflects the social reality of Kuwaitis and Arabs in general.

In his statement to the daily, AlShatti said the issue is not limited to the university’s student movements because it transcends the parliamentary elections and practices. This adverse phenomenon must be acknowledged by everyone who should work together in countering it through the implementation of practical programs and national vision, he added.

“Tribal based elections will make the society move backwards. This necessitates adhering to values in the sense that a civilian should not focus on his tribe or clan as they do not guarantee his rights nor provide him with privileges. Civil life is adorned with legislation, law and order,” AlShatti explained.

Meanwhile, Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Research and Curricula at the Ministry of Education Salah Dabshah told Al-Rai daily that a study is underway to cancel the textbooks of computer science and home economics from the curriculum, saying that the computer material is a purely practical issue in which the student should focus on the device only and more often than not is distracted between written material and the device, reports Al-Rai daily.

He pointed out the home economics book, which includes about 200 pages, mostly blank, can be canceled and replaced by a small brochure-like book pointing out that the study, is now focused on these two issues.

He added, “We will monitor the views of the educationalists on this issue.”
