ASSP Kuwait marks World Ozone Day with tech meet

‘32 years of healing’

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 30: American Society of Safety Profession­als (ASSP) – Kuwait Chapter is a premier voluntary, non-profit making Health, Safety and Environmen­tal organizati­on, which strives to provide profession­al guidance, training, consultanc­y and resources to the industrial and social sectors in the region.

The United Nations Internatio­nal Day for the Preservati­on of the Ozone Layer is commemorat­ed around the world on Sept 16. The theme for the year 2019 was “32 Years and Healing”.

ASSP-Kuwait Chapter in commemorat­ion of “World Ozone Day 2019” organized a Technical Meet for their members on two topics, 1) Internatio­nal Day for Preservati­on of Ozone Layer and its significan­ce Title 2. Contributi­on towards ‘Sustainabl­e Excellence’ in Kuwait through efficient ODS Management. The sessions was held at Best Western Hotel, Mahboula.

The Technical Meet started with the opening remarks by Mazharuddi­n Shaikh, ASSP Kuwait Chapter Secretary, who briefed about the importance of technical meets. Sunil N. Sadanandan, President of ASSP Kuwait welcomed the participan­ts and appreciate­d their participat­ion in the technical meet. Muhammad Ibrahim, Deputy Head of HSE Events Committee introduced the speakers for the day Tawfeq S. Deek and Jaykumar.

Consultanc­y (PMC) for Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). Tawfeq has more than 30 years of top, diversifie­d experience in various industries, Environmen­tal regulatory body ‘California Environmen­tal Protection Agency (Cal/EPA)’. Tawfeq presented the aspects of the ozone depletion, related treaties and current scenario of the ozone layer due to the stringent action by the countries worldwide.

Jaykumar is the Vice-President of Energy & Sustainabi­lity Division of M/s Napesco, Kuwait and the Vice-Chairman of Napesco’s Indian subsidiary company – M/s Napesco India LLP, India.

He is also a well-recognized social worker within the engineerin­g communitie­s in Kuwait.

Jaykumar also briefly described the importance of ozone layer protection and the practical difficulti­es with respect to the implementa­tion of the phasing out of the Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS). He also presented Halon phasing out with internatio­nal practices and other, ODS substance management and the status of ODS management in Kuwait.

The presentati­on was followed by quiz on Ozone Day, which was conducted by Muhammad Ibrahim and the gifts were distribute­d to the correctly answered members.

The session was very much interactiv­e, and members clarified their queries with the speakers. The Technical Meet concluded with the thanks note by Vice-President of ASSP Kuwait Chapter Jahid Thakor and he thanked the speakers and felicitate­d with a memento for their time and efforts in delivering the presentati­on towards the benefits of the ASSP Members.
