Pak beat Lanka by 67 runs in 2nd ODI

KARACHI, Pakistan, Sept 30, (AP): Pakistan marked the return of ODI cricket in Karachi after 10 years with a 67-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second one-day internatio­nal on Monday.

Babar Azam formed the backbone of Pakistan’s strong total of 305-7 as he smashed 115 off 105 balls. Babar also became the fastest Pakistani batsman to complete 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year in 19 matches. (40) before holing out at wide long on in the 46th over as Pakistan looked for quick runs in the final overs.

Bencic battled back from a set down to beat veteran Venus Williams 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki sailed into the second round with a 6-1, 6-3 win over American Lauren Davis.

German second seed Alexander Zverev carried his Laver Cup winning form into the China Open as he sailed into the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over wildcard Frances Tiafoe in Beijing on Monday.

In Tokyo, former US Open champion Marin Cilic mowed down local favourite Yuichi Sugita 6-4, 6-4 on Monday to reach the second round of the Japan Open Tennis Championsh­ips.

The 31-year-old, beaten in the first round last year, made no mistakes this time winning 88% of points on his booming first serve and saved the only break point he faced in the 74-minute contest to advance.

Up next for the Croat, who has slipped to 30th in the world rankings as he chases his first title this year, will be the winner of the clash between Chung Hyeon and Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
