Kuwait keen to help UN members in development and achieve SDGs
‘KFAED funds 981 projects worldwide’
NEW YORK, Oct 3, (KUNA): Kuwait has asserted keenness on supporting UN member countries confront challenges facing national development and thus achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Kuwait has been contributing to development in many countries with Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) financing more than 981 projects in 107 countries around the world, said Abdulwahab Al-Senan, Second Secretary at Kuwait permanent mission to the UN.
He was speaking late Wednesday before a meeting of the UN Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural affairs, which was discussing social development.
He said KFAED contributed, since establishment, over 6.3 billion Kuwaiti Dinars (over $21.7 billion) in loans.
Al-Senan said constitution of Kuwait guaranteed preservation of family, the pillar of society, thus the State was responsible for caring about families and individuals, as well as elderly.
“My country is adopting a solid and clear policy to support people with disabilities” to boost their role in society and ultimately SDGs, he said and cited Kuwait’s membership in the UN convention for the right of people with disabilities.
Kuwait, he added, was also paying a great attention to youth to enable them contribute to sustainable development.
Kuwait, said Al-Senan, established a fund that aimed at providing financial support for the youth to start own business in a move designed to address unemployment and promote private sector’s role in economic development.
Minister of Justice and Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs Advisor Dr Fahd Al-Afasi has issued a Ministerial Decree No. 2017/2019 appointing Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice Omar Sharqawi as deputy chairman of the permanent national committee on the implementation of the national strategy to prevent trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, reports Al-Rai daily.
