Slavin scores in OT to lift Hurricanes past Lightning

Mantha nets all 4 Red Wings goals in win over Stars

RALEIGH, North Carolina, Oct 7, (AP): Jaccob Slavin scored at 1:53 of overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Hurricanes improved to 3-0, overcoming third-period deficits and winning after regulation in each. Carolina won its opener over Montreal in a shootout on Thursday night, then beat Washington in overtime on Saturday night.

Dougie Hamilton, Brett Pesce and Erik Haula also scored for Carolina, and the Hurricanes held the Lightning to just two shots in the final two periods. Petr Mrazek made 10 saves for Carolina.

Tyler Johnson, Kevin Shattenkir­k and Steven Stamkos scored in the first period for Tampa Bay, and former Hurricanes goalie Curtis McElhinney made 40 saves.

Hamilton tied it on a power play with 7:12 left in the third period.

Haula’s power-play goal, off Hamilton rebound, cut it to 3-2 with 6:11 left in the second.

Red Wings 4, Stars 3

In Detroit, Anthony Mantha scored his career-high fourth goal with 53.3 seconds left, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars in their home opener.

Filip Hronek set up the goal with a centering pass after Dylan Larkin won a face-off. Mantha also scored early in the third to put Detroit ahead and Roope Hintz pulled Dallas into a 3-all tie 33 seconds later with his second goal.

Jonathan Bernier stopped 19 shots to help the Red Wings improve to 2-0.

The Red Wings had a 5-on-3 power play for 40 seconds midway through the third and failed to take advantage.

Dallas, shooting for its first win in three games, led 2-0 after the first period after Hintz and Tyler Seguin scored. The cushion didn’t last long. Mantha scored in the opening minute of the second period on a power play and pulled Detroit into a 2-all tie midway through the second period.

Anton Khudobin made 29 saves for the Stars, who pulled their goaltender to add an extra skater in the final minute and put pressure on Bernier to hold on for the victory. Video review was used with 1.6 seconds left to determine Alexander Radulov didn’t score when he tried to stuff the puck past Bernier.

Islanders 4, Jets 1 In Uniondale, New York, Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson and Anders Lee scored second-period goals and Thomas Greiss made 35 saves as the New York Islanders beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-1.

It was the first win of the season for the Islanders, who lost their home opener 2-1 to Washington on Friday.

The Jets lost for the second time in three games in the New York area to start their season. Winnipeg lost 6-4 to the Rangers in their season opener Thursday, and beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in a shootout Friday. The Jets are opening the season on a four-game trip that wraps up Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

After a scoreless first period, Bailey put on the Islanders on the board, tipping in a power-play goal at 1:51 of the second. Anthony Beauvillie­r and Devon Toews picked up assists.

It was the third straight game the Jets had allowed the opening goal.

Nelson made it 2-0 at 4:38, sending a shot past goaltender Laurent Brossoit, who started his second straight game and finished with 29 saves. Bailey and defenseman Ryan Pulock assisted on the goal.

Lee stretched the Islanders’ lead to 3-0 at 15:55 with his first goal of the season, assisted by Scott Mayfield and Jordan Eberle.

Patrik Laine put the Jets on the board at 17:06 of the second, snapping a shot past Thomas Greiss for his first goal of the season. The Islanders were one of two teams the 21-year-old Laine hadn’t scored against. Columbus remains the other.

Blake Wheeler and defenseman Anthony Bitetto, a Long Island native, were credited with assists on Laine’s goal.

Beauvillie­r scored for the Islanders at 1:25 of the third, with assists going to Leo Komarov and Derrick Brassard, his first point as a member of the Islanders.
