Talal Al-Fassam delivers speech at UN General Assembly
NEW YORK, Dec 18, (KUNA): Kuwait reiterated on Tuesday the importance of strengthening and coordinating humanitarian aid urgently, provided by the UN, during disasters and crises in affected areas to save threatened lives.
This was brought up during a speech by Kuwait at the UN General Assembly, delivered by Adviser of Kuwait’s Permanent Delegation to the UN Talal Al-Fassam, during the discussion of enhancing humanitarian coordination and help provided by the UN in disasters.
Kuwait, led by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, believes in the importance of providing relief and humanitarian assistance to help the affected worldwide, Al-Fassam said.
The UN General Assembly called for providing humanitarian help in its relevant resolutions and reports, as Kuwait continues to provide support to various global humanitarian issues and keep pace with events, crises and disasters, he added.
Mission
The rate of official development assistance provided by Kuwait was twice the percentage agreed internationally, in order to achieve its humanitarian mission, which reflects the values and principles of Kuwaitis, he mentioned.
Since 2008, Kuwait directed 10 percent of its total aid to the affected countries through UN agencies and organizations.
Al-Fassam’s delegation saw reports of the SecretaryGeneral listed under this item, all sharing the concern that millions of people are forced to flee their homes and lose their livelihoods due to conflict, violence and persecution, in which living examples of the conflict’s impact are found in Syria, Yemen, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Kuwait announced a few days ago its voluntary financial contributions to the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, with the amount of USD one million, in addition to providing help for next year with USD one million to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as well as USD two million to UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
He commended the vital role played by various UN organizations, agencies and partners in supporting the world, appreciating the significant role of the UN staff and all those working in the field of providing humanitarian help.
