Kuwait greets Sudanese govt, opposition rapprochement bid
World urged to redouble peace bid
NEW YORK, Dec 18, (KUNA): The State of Kuwait welcomed, late Tuesday, the meetings between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit and opposition leader Riek Machar last month and the mutual commitment to the pre-transitional period plan.
The plan will form the army, police and security forces in less than 100 days as part of an effort to a unity government.
This praise was delivered by Kuwait’s Permanent Delegate to the UN Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi to a Security Council meeting focusing on South Sudan.
Al-Otaibi also praised the ceasefire that is holding in most parts of South Sudan. He called on the international community to redouble efforts to ease the humanitarian burden on the population.
Commending the reduced number of civilians in UNMISS protection sites; he called for the Mission’s freedom of movement to be upheld, in line with the status of forces agreement and its Council mandate.
Meanwhile, Al-Otaibi condemned attacks on volunteers from the International Organization for Migration in October, saying that those responsible were not above humanitarian and international laws.
The Kuwaiti Ambassador hoped that his country would continue to play a role in supporting peace and prosperity in South Sudan.
Kuwait’s Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah departed the country Monday for Geneva to head a delegation to the First Global Refugee Forum.
The Forum was held with highlevel attendance of most world countries.
Al-Jarallah will then leave to New York to head a delegation for Kuwait last session as a member of the UN Security Council during the period from 19 to 24 of this month as well.
The accompanying delegation includes Assistant Minister and Al-Jarallah’s Office Director Ambassador Ayham Al-Omar and Assistant Minister for International Organizations Minister Plenipotentiary Nasser Al-Hain.
