Bello assured of justice for slain domestic
UK proud of its strong relationship with Kuwait
KUWAIT CITY, Feb 2: Philippine Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III met on Sunday with Kuwait Minister of Finance and Acting State Minister for Economic Affairs Mariam Al-Aqeel and discussed with her matters of mutual concern focusing on the welfare and protection of Filipino workers in Kuwait. Bello was accompanied by Philippine Charge d’ Affaires Mohd Nordin Pendosina Lomondot, DOLE Undersecretary Claro Arellano, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration Administrator Bernard Olalia, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Hans Leo Cacdac, Labor Attache Nasser Mustafa, POEA Directors John Rio Bautista and Ria Corazon Lano.
“We conveyed to the minister the purpose of our visit here that is to get an update on the case of OFW Jeanelyn Villavende and ensure that justice is served as well as the crafting of the harmonized standard employment contract for Filipino household service workers,” disclosed Bello to the Arab Times.
Bello outlined that Al-Aqeel extended them a warm welcome and gave her assurance of their utmost cooperation on the aforementioned matters.
On the same day, Bello also met with the Minister of Justice and Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Fahad Al-Afasi.
During their meeting, Bello requested from Al-Afasi an update on the cases of some Overseas Filipino workers namely Constancia Dayag, an HSW who died last year, the case of the HSW who was allegedly raped by an airport policeman upon her arrival at the Kuwait airport and the case of HSW Jeanelyn Villavende who was allegedly sexually abused and tortured to death by her Kuwaiti employers.
KUWAIT CITY, Feb 2, (KUNA): Kuwait and Britain on Sunday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and an “action plan” covering a wide range of issues, including healthcare, defense and trade, amongst other fields.
Kuwait’s Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah and Britain’s Minister of State for International Development and the Middle East Dr Andrew Murrison signed the deals on behalf of their respective countries, amid talks involving a “Joint Steering Group” from Kuwait and the UK.
The talks revolved around plans for more cooperation across numerous fields, while yielding an MoU between Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and UK Department for International Development, aiming to “establish a framework for operational cooperation.”
Another deal, between Kuwait Society of Engineers (KSE) and the UK Engineering Council, will provide membership to British engineers according to KSE requirements, read a joint statement issued after the talks.
On the military front, the officials concurred that cooperation was satisfactory, pending upcoming joint endeavors between both countries as part of efforts to push defense cooperation.
“The UK is proud of its strong relationship with Kuwait, a friendship which celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2019,” Murrison said, adding that the “the fruits of our ongoing partnership will continue to flourish as we move into 2020 and beyond.”
Kuwait on Sunday played host to a pan-Gulf cancer awareness
week sponsored by its health ministry, an initiative aiming to raise awareness and take action against cancer.
The World Health Organization has always prioritized chronic ailments, particularly, all forms of cancer, Dr Khaled Al-Saleh, the secretary general of the Gulf International Cancer
Center, said on the sidelines of the event.
Major advancements in technology over the years have made early detection more likely nowadays, he added, saying the week-long event comprises a slew of activities aiming to raise awareness on cancer.
Kuwait routinely puts together
similar initiatives in a bid to inform the public the latest surrounding the fight against cancer, according to Dr Hessa Al-Shaheen, the event’s chief organizer.
She called on spectators to attend the annual event and educate themselves on the latest cancer treatment strategies discovered.
