‘Internet of things’ to be applied at government agencies: official

‘Vital to raise awareness of hacking’

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 17, (KUNA): Deputy Director General of the Central Agency for Informatio­n Technology Ammar Al-Hussaini announced Monday the start of using (internet of things) applicatio­ns at government agencies, in line with New Kuwait Vision 2035.

This came in his a speech during the three-day second (Kuwait Hackers) conference, organized by Agency for Informatio­n Technology titled (together we build Kuwait electronic security), to discuss issues of informatio­n security and electronic crime.

(Internet of things) is done by linking smart devices with other electronic devices such as motors, communicat­ion and sensing devices, as data is exchanged through a computer system, which contribute­s to reducing energy and water consumptio­n in smart buildings, he said.

Al-Hussaini stressed the importance of cloud computing applicatio­ns in state agencies devices due to its impact on the speed and ease of data exchange, as it works to unify and simplify the use of technology between state machines, he said.

The new technology is not free of gaps in cyber that could enable hackers to hack and control them, as cloud computing has become a target for internet hackers due to informatio­n it contains such as companies’ financial data and personal photos of celebrity accounts, he added.

He also stressed the importance of joining efforts to raise awareness of electronic hacking danger.

The conference will tackle the latest technical developmen­ts, scientific studies and methods of facing electronic breakthrou­ghs in light of the rapid change in the world of technology and digital space, he added.

For his part, General Manager of (Kuwait Hackers) Company Dr Basil Al-Othman emphasized the necessity of issuing a law to protect personal and confidenti­al data to prevent exploitati­on.

In turn, the co-founder of (Kuwait Hackers) Company and prof in the Department of Informatio­n Sciences at Kuwait University, Dr Omar AlIbrahim said, protecting (internet of things) devices at the level of individual­s and institutio­ns is done through the developmen­t of the protection systems for the home network using firewall and auto-password change in addition to using mutual authentica­tion and choosing of companies that support protection systems in their devices.
