No. 3 Kansas snaps No. 1 Baylor’s run with win in Waco

Childs helps BYU upset Gonzaga to end Bulldogs’ 19-game winning streak

WACO, Texas, Feb 23, (AP): Udoka Azubuike had 23 points and a careerhigh 19 rebounds and No. 3 Kansas held on to beat No. 1 Baylor 64-61, snapping the Bears’ 23-game winning streak and likely ending their five-week hold on the No. 1 spot in the AP poll.

The Jayhawks (24-3, 13-1 Big 12) have won 12 in a row since their firstever home loss to Baylor on Jan 11. They had a 10-point lead with 6-1/2 minutes left but had to hold off Baylor’s late charge.

Isaiah Moss, who had 11 points, made two free throws for Kansas with 7.9 seconds left before a timeout. The Bears (24-2, 13-1) had one more shot, but Butler’s 3-pointer from beyond the top of the key ricocheted off the front of the iron as time expired.

Butler and MaCio Teague had hit consecutiv­e 3-pointers in the final halfminute to get Baylor within 62-61.

Devon Dotson added 13 points for the Jayhawks, who shot 51% (27 of 53) against a tenacious Baylor defense that held them to 55 points in a 12-point loss last month.

Butler had 19 points to lead the Bears, while Freddie Gillespie and Matthew Mayer each had 10.

Quickley made 4 of 6 from 3-point range and 8 of 17 shots overall to surpass his previous high of 23 points at Auburn on Feb 1. He scored all but four of his points in the second half. Tyrese Maxey had 13 points for first-place Kentucky (22-5, 12-2 Southeaste­rn Conference), which took a three-game lead over Florida (17-10, 9-5).

Louisville 72, N. Carolina 55 In Louisville, Kentucky, Jordan Nwora scored 18 points to lead Louisville over North Carolina.

The Cardinals (23-5, 14-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their second straight game and guaranteed they would stay in first place in the conference ahead of a Monday night matchup at No. 8 Florida State.

Villanova 64, Xavier 55 In Cincinnati, Saddiq Bey scored 22 points and Villanova extended its lateFebrua­ry surge, beating Xavier for its fourth straight win.

The Wildcats (21-6, 10-4 Big East) have recovered from a three-game losing streak that knocked them out of the league lead. They’ve won three road games during the streak, with victories at Temple, DePaul and Xavier.

Auburn 73, Tennessee 66 In Auburn, Alabama, Samir Doughty scored 22 points and Auburn rallied from a 17-point deficit in the second half to beat Tennessee in a game marred by an ugly incident involving a fan.

A student was ejected from the game after directing a derogatory comment toward Tennessee’s Santiago Vescovi and will face a disciplina­ry hearing, an Auburn official said. The fan was overheard on TV calling out, “Go back to Uruguay! This is America!”

Oregon73, Arizona 72, OT In Tucson, Arizona, Payton Pritchard scored a career-high 38 points, Shakur Juiston added all of Oregon’s points in overtime and the Ducks rallied to beat Arizona.

Pritchard had a terrific game in regulation and Juiston was the unlikely hero in overtime, scoring nine points, including a layup with 1.4 seconds left that was the winner. Arizona had one more great opportunit­y but Christian Koloko missed two free throws with one second left that could have tied or won the game.

TCU 67, W. Virginia 60, OT In Fort Worth, Texas, Kevin Samuel scored six of his 19 points in overtime and TCU extended West Virginia’s Big 12 road woes.

The Horned Frogs (15-12, 6-8 Big 12) thought they had won for just the second time in nine games in regulation when Desmond Bane sent the crowd into a frenzy on a driving layup with 0.9 seconds left. But the senior guard was called for pushing off as he went up for the shot.

UCLA 70, Colorado 63 In Boulder, Colorado, Tyger Campbell had seven of his 15 points during a 20-3 UCLA run in the second half, and the Bruins rallied from nine points down to beat Colorado and tie the Buffaloes atop the Pac-12 Conference.

Campbell added 11 assists and Cody Riley scored 16 points, 14 in the second half. UCLA (17-11, 10-5) has won nine of its last 11.

Providence 84, Marquette 72 In Providence, Rhode Island, Luwane Pipkins scored 24 points and David Duke had 15 to lead Providence past Marquette, the Friars’ fourth straight victory over a ranked team.

Markus Howard scored 38 points for Marquette, which lost its third straight game. Howard shot 10 for 25 from the field and had just one assist while committing four of the Golden Eagles’ (179, 7-7 Big East) 18 turnovers.

Memphis 60, Houston 59 In Memphis, Tennessee, Precious Achiuwa scored 10 points, including the go-ahead free throw with 28.2 seconds left, and Memphis beat Houston.

Malcolm Dandridge scored 12 points and Lester Quinones and Tyler Harris had 10 points apiece as Memphis (19-8, 8-6 American Athletic Conference) won its second straight.

Eric Gordon and Ben McLemore each scored 12 off the bench for Houston.

Donovan Mitchell scored 31 and Jordan Clarkson had 22 for the Jazz, who cut the Rockets’ lead to seven in the fourth quarter a couple times but could never get closer.

Suns 112, Bulls 104 In Chicago, DeAndre Ayton dominated with 28 points and 19 rebounds, Devin Booker had 29 points and the Phoenix Suns beat the Chicago Bulls 112-104.

Phoenix outscored Chicago by 13 in the third quarter to wipe out a 10-point halftime deficit and ended the game on a 17-4 run to come away with the win after losing seven of nine. The Bulls dropped their eighth in a row.

Ricky Rubio added 18 points and 11 assists, and Kelly Oubre Jr had 14 points to help the Suns snap a fivegame road losing streak.

Bulls rookie Coby White set a career high with 33 points and matched one by making seven 3-pointers. Zach LaVine scored 20 points.

Chicago led 96-95 when Phoenix’s Cameron Johnson made a 3 with 6:30 left to give the Suns a 98-86 lead, sparking the game-ending run.

Hawks 111, Mavericks 107 In Atlanta, John Collins had 35 points and 17 rebounds, Trae Young scored 13 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and the Atlanta Hawks rallied late to beat the Dallas Mavericks 111107.

Collins’ follow shot, credited after a goaltendin­g call was overturned, sealed it with 8.4 seconds remaining.

Tim Hardaway Jr scored 20 of his season high-tying 33 points in the first half and Seth Curry added 22 for Dallas, which couldn’t overcome a depleted roster.

The game was billed as a showdown between Luka Doncic and Young, two second-year All-Stars linked together since a draft-night trade in 2018, but the matchup never materializ­ed.

Kings 112, Clippers 103 In Los Angeles, Kent Bazemore scored a season-high 23 points, Bogdan Bogdanovic added 20 and the Sacramento Kings beat the Los Angeles Clippers on the road for the second time in less than a month, winning 112-103.

De’Aaron Fox had 20 points and eight assists for the surging Kings. They have won two straight out of the All-Star break and eight of 12 overall.

Leonard scored 31 points in his return from his MVP performanc­e in Chicago, but the Clippers returned from the All-Star break with their first three-game losing streak of the season. Lou Williams added 24 points, and Montrezl Harrell had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Nets 115, Hornets 86 In Charlotte, North Carolina, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points and the Brooklyn Nets snapped the Charlotte Hornets’ three-game win streak with a 115-86 victory.

Eight Brooklyn players scored in double figures, including Caris LeVert with 17. Garrett Temple added 15 points and 10 rebounds, Jarrett Allen had 12 points and 11 rebounds and the Nets bounced back from a 112-104 overtime loss to the 76ers on Thursday night.

Townsend, who missed her only two shots in the first half when she picked up two fouls, helped the Bulldogs breakaway from a 26-23 lead at intermissi­on with a 23-9 advantage in the third quarter. This was the 16th game this season Gonzaga, which beat the Waves 70-36 in the first meeting, did not allow more than 50 points.

Melody Kempton added 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Bulldogs (27-2, 16-1 West Coast Conference), Jessie Loera added 10 points and Jenn Wirth grabbed 10 rebounds.
